Peru Coffee Exports in January-February Plummets 66% On Year
Coffee Network (Bogotá)- Peru shipped 218,194 bags of 60-kg of coffee in January and February 2025, down from 642,692 bags in the same period last year, according to the Peruvian coffee and cocoa chamber.
The drop represents a decrease of 66% on the year, while in terms of value, shipments totaled $34.5 million, 64% less than in the same period of the previous year, despite a 52% increase in the average price, which stood at $5.43 per kilogram.
Peru produces coffee in March-December, while production in February and January record the lowest production levels per year on seasonal basis, according to a source at the Peruvian coffee and cocoa chamber. However, it is crucial to highlight that 2024 was an atypical year, driven by pressure from new regulations and sharply rising prices, the chamber added.
To put these figures into perspective, in the same period in 2020, a year more representative of the sector's average performance, 248,427 60-kg bags were exported. Compared to that year, exports from January to February 2025 show a 12.2% drop in volume, the chamber added.
In February, coffee exports totaled 59,416 bags, with an FOB value of $22.7 million. This result represents a 77% reduction, using information from the import-export data company Veritrade.
Despite the drop in volume, the average price per quintal experienced a notable increase, rising from $160 in 2024 to $266 in 2025, reflecting a context of lower supply and higher international costs.
Top Export Destinations
The United States consolidated its position as the main destination for Peruvian coffee in the January-February 2025 period, with a total of 52,414 bags exported, equivalent to $18.8 million in FOB value. Despite the decline in overall volumes, the U.S. market continues to lead the demand for Peruvian coffee.
Germany ranked second with 30,174 bags exported, generating an FOB value of $10.1 million. This market maintains its preference for quality coffees and has maintained its position among the main buyers of Peruvian coffee.
Canada ranked third with 22,869 bags shipped, with an FOB value of $7.7 million. The growth in coffee consumption in this country has driven stable demand, positioning Peru as a key supplier in the region. Mexico and Belgium completed the list of the top five export destinations. Mexico registered 21,852 bags exported with an FOB value of $5.1 million, while Belgium imported 19,281 bags for an FOB value of $7.1 million. These markets have shown positive growth in recent years and continue to represent key opportunities for Peruvian exports. Together, these five countries accounted for 67% of total exports during the period, highlighting the importance of diversifying and strengthening the presence of Peruvian coffee in strategic international markets.
International markets.
The global coffee market has been marked by price volatility and reduced supply in the first two months of the year. In January, the coffee price reached an all-time high of 310.12 cents per pound, reflecting a 58.3% increase compared to the same month in 2024. However, this level was surpassed in February, when the composite price index continued its upward trend and reached 375.34 cents per pound in the first weeks of the month, representing a 265.65% increase compared to the same period in 2020. Adverse weather conditions in Brazil and Vietnam continue to limit global supply. Brazil, the main coffee producer, forecasts a reduced harvest for 2025, which has strengthened expectations that prices will remain high in the coming months. Furthermore, the new administration's tariff threats in the United States have generated uncertainty in international trade, indirectly impacting the coffee sector.
