Peru Coffee Exports To Increase As much as 10%, Others See a 16% rise in 2021
Coffee Network (Bogota)- Peru’s coffee exports in the calendar year are expected to increase 5%-10% to median of 3.7 million bags of 60-kg as renovated coffee plantations are expected to begin yielding higher amounts of coffee this year, according to the coffee and cocoa Peruvian Chamber.
Peru renovated 40,000-60,000 coffee hectares in 2017 and the renovation of such hectares are expected begin yielding higher amounts of coffee in 2021.
But the US Agricultural Department recently said in its coffee attaché that Peru’s coffee exports in the coffee year 2021/22 will likely rise 16% to 3.85 million bags.
USDA expects Peru’s coffee production in marketing year (MY) 2021/22 (April/March to rebound 17%, reaching 3.95 million bags (60 kilograms per bag). This expected increase is due to good weather conditions and improving international coffee prices.
In addition, higher international prices will allow producers to invest in fertilizers and a more thorough harvesting, leaving less grain on the trees. Coffee producers have been facing financial difficulties in the past three years as revenues have not met production costs.
Peru is in the midst of picking and shipping the bulk of its harvest. The Andean nation exports the bulk of the 2021 harvest in May-August. Coffee producers and exporters are enjoying the benefits of high international coffee prices, which are boosting coffee exports from this Andean nation, the chamber said.
ELECTIONS
Peru held the second round of presidential elections on Sunday with the leftist teacher Pedro Castillo, widening a narrow lead against Keiko Fujimori.
The hard-left candidate Castillo holds a razor-thin lead of about 0.4% over his far-right opponent, an advantage of about 70,000 votes. But Fujimori is awaiting the votes of Peruvians living abroad to claim victory.
Castillo, who comes from the coffee-producing region of Cajamarca, has promised coffee growers to grant loans without specifying more details about it. The potential victory of Castillo has raised concerns among the national and international community, prompting a strong depreciation of the Peruvian currency El Sol.
The vote in the Andean nation has split the country between the poor, rural Andes and the wealthier people in urban settlements.
COFFEE SUMMIT
The Peruvian coffee and cocoa chamber is holding its 23rd convention. The virtual conference will take place between 29 June and July 2.

Daily coffee report

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
