Program Supports Rural Families in Southern Colombia To Produce Cocoa

Commodities Network (Bogota) - As a strategy to promote sustainable business models that contribute to forest conservation in the Colombian Amazon, 140 families of the Association of Agricultural Producers Asopa Loro Uno (Asopa), implement an agro-environmental project to strengthen the cocoa production as their main source of income.

Asopa is a non-profit organization with more than 20 years of experience that has been strengthened with the project, explained Ángel María Obando, legal representative by Asopa.

“It brings us many benefits such as strengthening ourselves in these issues of

sustainability of the crop, in having drying rooms that will support us

to improve the quality of the product, sell at a better price and so on

improve the quality of life of farming families,” said Ángel

Maria Obando.

The initiative seeks to invest a total of COP2.106 billion Colombian pesos ($554,000), of which the Program Sustainable Colombia - an initiative of the Colombia in Peace Fund and the Inter-American Development Bank – contribute with COP1.26 billion

These resources are administered by the Corporation for Studies Interdisciplinary and Technical Consulting (Cetec) and intended for purchase of inputs and tools, technical support on the farm and the conducting training for producers, among others. The remaining COP846 million are local counterparts provided by the communities mainly in kind and represented in the hand of construction site.

This initiative is implemented in San Miguel and Valle del Guamuez (Putumayo), two municipalities prioritized by the National Government to

implement the Peace Agreement and contribute to job creation in rural areas that raises the living conditions of the population most affected by the armed conflict in the country.

About the Sustainable Colombia Program

The Sustainable Colombia Program is an initiative of the National Government which is executed by the Colombia in Peace Fund and which currently co-finances around 200 agro-environmental projects, which benefit

more than 37,000 rural families.

Its prioritized area of intervention corresponds to the 170 municipalities

PDET and its financing comes from the Loan to the Nation 4424/OC-CO

of the Inter-American Development Bank. This multi-sector operation

has the support and participation of the Ministries of Agriculture,

Environment and Finance; the National Planning Department (DNP),

APC-Colombia and the Peace Agreement Implementation Unit.

About the Colombia in Peace Fund

The Colombia in Peace Fund (FCP) is a financial vehicle created with

occasion of the signing of the Peace Agreement in 2016.

Colombia is one of few countries in the world that produces fino de aroma cocoa. Production is mainly used to supply local consumption of cocoa but there are growing exports.

Cocoa Storm Gathers as Two Crops and El Nino Line Up Against Supply

Cocoa's current harvest looks comfortably supplied, yet prices keep climbing as attention turns to the next two crops. Poor West Africa weather and lingering El Nino risk have put both the 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons in doubt, and the surplus built this year may not be enough to cover them.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
