Rain-Disrupted Harvest: A 10% Drop in Colombian Coffee Output

Bogotá (Coffee Network) — Colombia produced 1.208 million 60-kg bags of coffee in October, down from 1.339 million in the same month last year, as torrential rains disrupted flowering and reduced output, according to figures from the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC).

Despite the year-on-year decline, production in October was slightly higher than the 1.142 million bags recorded in September, suggesting that output from the country’s main harvest is gradually increasing.

Colombia’s main harvest runs from September through December, though heavy rainfall could extend picking into January. This harvest typically accounts for about 60% of annual production, concentrated in the central provinces of Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, Valle del Cauca, Antioquia, and parts of Huila.

For the 2024–2025 coffee year (November–October), Colombia produced 14.738 million bags, a significant increase from 12.940 million in the previous cycle.

“Although production in October showed a 10% decrease compared to the same month in 2024—as previously announced by the Federation's manager, Germán Bahamón—the accumulated result of the past 12 months confirms a general upward trend in national production,” the FNC said.

A dry spell linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon last year boosted flowering, leading to strong production earlier in 2024. However, torrential rains since December have delayed subsequent flowering, resulting in lower output expected between September and December—Colombia’s key harvest months.

Exports Edge Higher

Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee producer, exported 1.042 million bags in October, slightly above the 1.039 million shipped in the same month last year.
Exports were, however, marginally lower than the 1.063 million bags recorded in September.

During the 2024–2025 coffee year, exports rose 11% to 13.346 million bags, compared with 11.966 million in the previous period.

Imports Surge

In October, Colombia imported 182,000 bags, up sharply from 26,000 bags a year earlier. Analysts attribute the surge to the re-export of Brazilian and Vietnamese coffee through Colombia, taking advantage of lower tariffs on shipments entering the U.S.

However, some market participants downplayed this explanation, suggesting that rising domestic consumption has also driven the increase in imports.

Total imports during the 2024–2025 coffee year reached 998,000 bags.

Domestic consumption rises

Colombian coffee consumption climbed to 2.264 million bags in the 2024–2025 coffee year, with 190,000 bags consumed in October—up from 181,000 bags in the same month last year.

According to consultancy Kantar, per capita coffee consumption in Colombia likely rose to 3.8 kg in 2024, from 2.8 kg in 2023. The increase reflects a growing appreciation for coffee, higher consumption frequency—88% of Colombians drink coffee at least once a week—and a diversification of brewing methods, Kantar added.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
