Roadblocks in Colombia Prevent Coffee Growers To Transport Beans, Prevent Fertilizer Arrival

Coffee Network (Bogota)- Colombian rice farmers have blocked main roads in some country’s coffee-producing departments, preventing the arrival of beans to warehouses, prompting coffee farmers to store beans at their farms, market participants said.

Colombia’s rice growers’ protests have entered their seventh day, paralyzing several highways across the country. The reasons for the protests include falling rice prices, increased production costs and lack of government intervention.

The roadblocks are causing daily losses in the transportation sector amounting to millions of dollars, though protest organizers are allowing intermittent passage to prevent emergency situations.

A government’s bailout will only cover small-rice growers and not “large landowners,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro said in a televised speech last night.

The producers insist that a fair price per load should be above COP 220,000 (approximately US$52), considering the cost of inputs and all necessary production expenses; otherwise, they will incur losses. Currently, they are receiving 185,000 COP (approximately US$44).

Throughout the week, rice growers in several regions of Colombia, in Tolima, Huila, Meta, Cordoba, Sucre and Casanare have been protesting on highways across the country.

Mauricio Rivera, general manager of the Huila coffee cooperative CooCentral, said luckily Huila, Colombia’s largest coffee-producing province, is not picking a bulk of beans now, but the few beans being collected are stockpiled at the farmers houses as it is difficult to reach storage houses and cooperatives’ warehouses.

Fernando Vargas, general manager of Huila’s coffee cooperative of CadefiHuila, said the road blockades are preventing the arrival of fertilizers but they have enough fertilizers stockpiled to withstand the situation. “Luckily there is no coffee coming out right now,” he told Coffee Network.

Huila maintained its ranking as the country’s largest coffee-producing province. It weighs 19.08% of the total output in the coffee year. Colombia produced 12.75 million bags in the 2023-2024 coffee year, which means Huila produced almost 2.433 million bags in the coffee year. Huila picks 60% of its annual harvest during the months of September, October and November. Its main harvest is collected in the south of this province. Huila, located in the southeast of Colombia, is Colombia’s largest coffee producing province.

Laura Enciso, a coffee producer at the central province of Tolima, which produces the coffee La Leona, said the strike has affected mobility.” The journeys are very long. In terms of coffee production and transportation, for now, not much in the sense that we are not yet in the harvest, therefore coffee has not been transported. However, the entry of food and other products from the family basket to Gaitania, are taking longer,” she said.
