The Effects of Rainfall In Colombia’s Secondary Crop

Coffee Network (Bogota) – Heavy rains in the Colombian southern provinces most likely will reduce the country’s secondary crop, and torrential downpours could likely delay their main harvest but quality at beans is coming improved, coffee growers and exporters said.

Colombia harvests the country’s secondary harvest in the southern provinces of Nariño, Cauca, and some parts of Huila. The main harvest weights about 45% of the country’s total output.

Although output is not as large as the harvest in the traditional coffee belt during the second half of the year, their output is key to reach the palate of prestigious international roasters that partly supply beans from those provinces.

Cauca, Nariño and some parts of Huila produce one of Colombia’s highest coffee qualities. Coffee produced in Nariño and Cauca are internationally well-known for its volcanic soil The volcanic soil along with the cloud-covered climate in the area provides an ideal environment to grow high-quality coffee. Narino accounts for 4.5% of Colombia's total coffee output. Cauca contributes with 10.94%, while Huila produces slightly more than 19%, making it the largest coffee producer.

The Nariño coffee cooperative Asprounion, which exports beans to Australia and the US, says there is a change in the bimodal behavior of the flora  stimulated by climate change. While plants and coffee growers adapt, production decreases a little. Burbano believes output could fall 15% during their main harvest.

“Due to the excessive rainfall, there was affectation in flower abortion and on all fruits in the coldest parts. Above 1,800 meters above sea level. Although new and well fertilized crops have not been affected,” Burbano said.

“But the quality will be. Very good same as in the previous year. By making less coffee on the tree, it concentrates the sweets better in the beans. In addition, the beans will be collected more easily, and the drying process is regular,” he added.

Heavy rains reduced Colombia’s secondary crop, and torrential downpours earlier this year will delay the main harvest by two months, also trimming the amount available for the export market, coffee growers and coffee cooperatives said.

Colombia, the world’s No.3 coffee producer and its top producer of washed Arabica beans, will finish collecting the country’s secondary crop in June and July compared with the usual picking period of April- June because rains will delay their main harvest

Cloudy skies did not allow solar radiation to permit proper flowering for the country’s secondary harvest of this year’s output. Climate change with heavy downpours didn’t allow the formation of cherries in coffee plantations at high altitudes.

Rains are expected to end in March-April when the La Niña weather phenomenon is expected to end.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
