Torrential Rains In Colombia Block Roads, Cuts Flowers; Coffee Coming Too Humid

Coffee Network (Bogota)- Torrential rains is the new headache for Colombian coffee growers, who not only have had to endure to a national strike that completes 50 days blocking roads, but now have to face landslides and blocked roads because of torrential rains.

In Tolima, the country’s third-largest coffee producing province, torrential rains have cut the transit of coffee trucks as rains destroyed the road that links Planadas with Tolima’s capital Ibague and Planadas with Neiva. Planadas, which is in the midst of picking its main harvest, coffee has won several international prices, and it is one of the most wanted coffees produced in Colombia among international buyers.

“The road is totally blocked, and it is the only good road that we have to bring coffee to Neiva or to ports. We have two additional roads, but they are not suitable for big trucks., “Camilo Enciso, general manager of the ecologic coffee cooperative of Planadas, told Coffee Network noting that 6,000 coffee families live on producing beans.

Colombia has been experiencing torrential rains since early May with several coffee stations registering higher-than-normal precipitations in the fifth month of the year, according to the coffee research institute Cenicafe. Colombia’s coffee weather station of Blonay in the Caribbean province of Cesar registered 375 milometers of rain in May, compared with a historic average of 145mm, Cenicafe’s most recent report says. The weather station Bertha in the central province of Boyacá registered 319mm of rainfall in May , compared with 270 mm in a historic average for that month. The weather stations Ospina Perez and Simon Campos in Huila and Nariño also registered higher pluviosity than average for May.

The coffee growers´ federation recommends coffee growers who registered flowerings in February and March to pay close attention to the attack of roya amid the higher-than-normal rainfall registered in May.

A general manager of a large coffee cooperative in the province of Huila, Colombia’s largest-coffee producing province, said there is a shortage of flowers resulting from a very timid flowering season in Huila, which allows them to predict that the main harvest in the second half of the year will come reduced.

In southern province of Nariño, close to Ecuador, Luis Carlos Burbano, general manager of the coffee cooperative Asprounion and who is a private exporter of coffee said lack of sun is preventing coffee from drying properly. As a result, they are seen coffee coming with 12% -13% of humidity, which is much higher than the average 9%.

In the eastern province of Antioquia, Juan Alvaro Arboleda a large coffee grower in the Colombia’s second-largest coffee producing province, coffee plantations have endured rainfall since last year and the harvest during the second half of the year will come “extremely low”. Colombia experienced torrential rains since September as the la Niña weather phenomenon merged with the rainy season. La Niña continued until late March and early April.

Maria Fernanda Rey, a grower of specialty coffee in the Santander province, said rains have not caused any damages to their plantations, located in the La Mesa de Los Santos region. Rey produces high-quality Arabica beans under the brand Café de Mi Finca.

For June, Cenicafe says lower-than-normal rainfall will be registered in the northern coffee producing regions, while in Nariño, large sectors of Tolima, South of Antioquia and Quindío, and

sectors of the East of Caldas, Center-West of Risaralda, West from Cundinamarca, North of Huila,

Southeastern Cauca and piedmont Amazon rainforest, rains are estimated between 10% and 40% above normal.

In the rest of the coffee region of Colombia rains are expected close to the conditions historically present in June.
