U.S. Coffee Prices Hit Highest Level on Record in January 2026

CoffeeNetwork (New York) - U.S. consumers just experienced the most expensive cup of at‑home coffee in modern history. According to newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average retail price for a pound of ground roast coffee reached $9.366 in January 2026, the highest monthly price ever recorded in the Consumer Price Index’s coffee series dating back to 1980.

This historic high caps a dramatic two‑year climb in coffee prices that accelerated sharply throughout 2025. At the start of that year, the average price sat at $7.019 in January 2025, but by September it had surged to $9.139, followed by $9.258 in November and $9.053 in December, before breaking all previous records to reach $9.366 in the first month of 2026.

While coffee has seen multiple inflationary cycles over the past four decades, nothing in the historical dataset comes close to this latest surge. Even during high‑price eras like the early 2010s—when severe leaf rust outbreaks across Central America constricted supply—retail prices plateaued in the $5–$6 range, far below today’s levels. The 1990s price spikes brought averages briefly above $4, and the 1986 freeze‑induced shock drove prices to the $3.70–$3.74 range. But never before has the U.S. consumer faced anything remotely approaching the $9‑plus territory now defining supermarket shelves.

Part of the story is persistence: retail coffee has increased almost every single year since 2022, but the pace accelerated rapidly in 2024 and 2025. Prices moved from $6.124 in January 2024 to $6.868 by November, signaling the start of a rapid climb that continued without interruption into 2025. By summer 2025, the U.S. market was already entering unprecedented terrain, with averages surpassing $8 per pound for the first time ever in June and July. From June’s $8.132 and July’s $8.414, the momentum only intensified—setting the stage for the record‑breaking ceiling reached in early 2026.

The steep trajectory reflected a convergence of factors throughout 2024–2025: tightening global inventories, trade‑flow disruptions, climate‑affected harvests, and the cascading effects of higher production and transportation costs that filtered into consumer retail months later. But whatever the drivers, the BLS data makes one trend unmistakably clear: January 2026 now stands as the most expensive month for U.S. coffee drinkers in the 46‑year history of recorded average retail prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
