Violent Lootings In Colombia’s Buenaventura Port Resulted in Coffee Robbery

Coffee Network (Bogota)- Criminals looted the country’s largest port on the Colombian Pacific Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura, resulting in the robbery of 1,300 bags of 70-kg of excelso-type of coffee as the country enters the 23-day of a national strike.

Asoexport, the Colombian coffee exporters association, said this one-time event has never happened in the world’s third-largest coffee exporter, and it is extremely worrisome.

The Colombian coffee growers federation FNC made an urgent call to stop these actions and other acts of violence, as well as the roadblocks that disturb the normal transit of coffee , food security, health, life and work of Colombians.

Buenaventura, located on the Colombian Pacific, is the most important port for coffee exports as it contributes with 70% of the country’s total coffee exports. A video footage sent to Coffee Network shows the moment, criminals steel bags of coffee from the port.

The violent lootings as well as shooting between criminal bands that disputed the stolen coffee as well as other cargo resulted in the death of three people and forced the mayor of this important city to declare a curfew, commander Francisco Cubides of Colombia’s navy. Buenaventura as well as other towns in the country’s Pacific coast are being disputed by criminal bands and fractioned drug cartels that want to control the traffic of illicit drugs in Buenaventura.

Neither Asoexport nor FNC said to whom belonged the coffee. But Asoexport said coffee was excelso-type of beans which is pricie in international markets.

FNC said the difficult situation that afflicts the port in the Pacific adds to the already discouraging situation faced by the coffee sector, as a result of the roadblocks in the national territory, which have prevented transporting beans from the farms to storage centers and from these to the ports.

To date, at least 1,200 trailers with coffee have not been able to reach the different ports of Colombia, thus preventing the export of more than half a million bags of beans, FNC said.

Colombian coffee growers, through their representatives on the Steering Committee, urge peaceful and immediate solutions, especially when this situation has cost the lives of dozens of compatriots and has interrupted the supply of inputs, food and fuel to various regions of the country.

Added to all of the above is the delay in vaccination against covid-19, which further deepens the complex economic, social and health situation facing Colombia.

“Coffee growers have always contributed to the social and economic development of Colombia. Today, when the sector can once again be a fundamental actor in the economic recovery, the blockades and vandalism are an obstacle to this end and a source of unease for Colombians,” FNC added.

Social unrest entered a fourth week even after President Ivan Duque withdrew a controversial tax reform bill that first ignited nationwide demonstrations on 28 April. The blockades escalated after a self-appointed national strike committee said the national strike continues as they had “little empathy” with the government in a meeting that took place last week. The National Strike Committee and the government are meeting again this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
