FOREX.com Market Analyst Razan Hilal joins Johanna Botta to explain why apparently calm markets may soon confront a new bout of volatility.

Hilal notes that April’s candles on the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq display “a very extended shadow,” signalling persistent dip-buying but no clear breakout. The S&P is testing 5,570, the Nasdaq 19,500 and the Dow 40,500. “The markets are looking a bit flat at key levels … a bit of the calm before the storm” amid heavy earnings and data releases. Until results from today through Thursday land, indices may remain range-bound.
On the four-hour chart the DXY clings to the 98.00 floor while tracing “a potential inverted head and shoulders” pattern. Hilal cautions that only a decisive move above 111 level would complete the reversal; weaker prints on growth or inflation could trigger “an extended consolidation or possibly lean into the weaker side” before Friday’s payrolls.
Tokyo core CPI at 3.4 % leaves the Bank of Japan under pressure. USD/JPY has bounced at the “golden 0.618 Fibonacci retracement … also aligning with the lows of September 2024” near 139.11. Hilal sees “a possible short-term bullish rebound” unless Governor Ueda surprises with a hawkish tilt; in that case, bears could press to 138 or even 134.
After setting a record last week, gold now oscillates between 3,280 and 3,250. Hilal calls the drift “a short consolidation … a bit of a calm before the storm” where “a break in either way can possibly push gold for another hundred dollars”. Further geopolitical tension or dollar weakness would favour another run toward 4,000, but overbought conditions argue for a pullback first.

Dollar to reflect US economic data, Central Bank minutes, inflation in Brazil, and the Middle East

US indices have led sentiment to fresh highs this past week even as the fundamental backdrop struggles to present a solid foothold. Will thin liquidity aid or hamper the swell and what does the event risk ahead propose?

A softer run of U.S. data is doing more to move the U.S. dollar than any chart, with a jobs report and an inflation print set to land back to back. A cooler U.S. CPI report would hand the Federal Reserve room to ease, and that prospect is already loosening the dollar's grip.
