Markets Rethink Rate Path as Trump Eyes Fed Shake-Up

Alex Ridgers, StoneX Global Head of Retail Dealing, examines the forces driving the US dollar’s sharp decline and implications for traders.

Key Takeaways

  • US dollar weakens amid speculation over Fed chair replacement
  • Retail traders face fewer constraints but more uncertainty
  • Focus shifts back to AI stocks as growth narrative stalls

Dollar Drops as Fed Policy Gets Political

Markets were jolted by reports that Donald Trump may announce a successor to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as early as September. “While he's not actually going out the door yet, as soon as that happens it completely undermines that hawkish focus of the Fed”. This perceived shift toward a more dovish stance has driven significant weakness in the U.S. dollar.

Rates, Indices and the Return of Correlation

Ridgers noted that markets are beginning to return to a traditional pattern: “There’s such a high correlation between lower interest rates and rallying indices”. After months of market fragmentation due to geopolitical tensions and shifting narratives, the return of interest-rate sensitivity appears to be reshaping investor behavior.

Retail Traders Adapt to a Less Constrained Market

The removal of macro constraints has created new dynamics for retail participants. Ridgers described the shift as going from “being locked in a shed” to “out in the middle of a field”. With major FX pairs like EUR/USD hitting multi-year highs, retail traders are now balancing opportunity with uncertainty.

Commodities and AI Stocks Take Diverging Paths

While some expected a commodity-led recovery, Ridgers remains cautious: “There’s nothing I really see on the industrial front to say. There might be cheap money pushing markets higher, but it's not a sort of growth like the industrial story”. Instead, attention has turned back to AI, with Nvidia regaining its title as the world’s most valuable company. “If you haven’t got the best AI in your portfolio, it’s going to struggle”.
