Fertilizer Markets Are On Edge Over India’s Next Move
Josh Linville, Vice President of Fertilizer at StoneX, outlines a week of volatility in the global fertilizer market.
Key Takeaways
Tariff threats on Russia raise concerns over global fertilizer supply
India’s surprise urea tender supports prices and market activity
Corn to DAP price ratios approach all-time highs
Tariff Threats and Global Supply Chains
Linville notes that proposed tariffs on Russian fertilizer exports have the potential to disrupt established trade flows. “President Trump threatening massive tariffs on Russia… is now willing to start putting a little more heavy handed, tariffs upon Russia until they agree to peace”. This would force global buyers to rethink supply routes, especially as Russia remains a key exporter of major fertilizers.
India’s Surprise Urea Tender
Unexpected timing from India’s latest urea purchase surprised many. Linville explains, “Very few thought it was coming as quickly as it did. Everybody thought it was still a few more weeks down the road”. The tender supported urea prices and reversed a recent decline, highlighting how quickly market sentiment can shift.
Phosphate Prices and Demand Destruction
Phosphate prices continue to creep higher, with market participants watching for signs of demand destruction. Linville observes, “Phosphates just continuing to creep higher… the market just continues to ask how much higher can it go?” India’s persistent demand amid low stockpiles has amplified the effect.
Ratios Near Records and Farmer Impact
Linville draws attention to the corn to DAP ratio, a key measure of farm input cost pressure. “We are now within nine bushels of the all time record that was set in late 2008, at the peak of the fertilizer market, with grain prices starting to fall apart”. Despite this, he points out that current grain and fertilizer prices present a different situation than in past cycles.
