The expansion of US liquefied natural gas capacity is transforming global gas flows and reshaping regional trade balances. As production and export capabilities surge, the US is emerging as a dominant force in meeting international demand. This shift is redefining price dynamics and positioning the country at the center of global energy interdependence.
In this interview, Isabela Garcia, Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil, explains how expanding US LNG capacity is reshaping global trade flows and market dynamics.
Key Themes from the Discussion
US natural gas production reached record levels in mid-July, boosting export potential.
New LNG terminals will raise export capacity by 23 billion cubic feet per year by end-2024.
Rising US exports are reshaping global supply patterns and influencing price formation.
Garcia explains that record production levels have positioned the United States as a pivotal LNG supplier. “We saw gas production pick it up, mainly because prices were better earlier this year”, she noted, highlighting how improved economics have driven new investments. The completion of several export terminals by year-end 2024 will lift total capacity by 23 billion cubic feet per year. These volumes will enhance the US role as a flexible swing supplier to Europe and Asia, intensifying competition among producers.
Changing Global Flows and Price Influence
With more cargoes moving overseas, Garcia observed that exports are now the biggest driver of US gas demand. “We’re seeing stronger investment in new liquefied natural gas terminals … which boosted the country’s capacity to supply foreign markets”. This shift has lowered domestic prices even as storage levels remain high, while globally it is altering benchmark relationships between Henry Hub, TTF, and JKM. As US LNG continues to scale, its influence on trade routes and pricing mechanisms will only deepen, marking a structural change in global energy markets.
