Colombia’s Freeze-Dried Coffee Company Makes Inroads into Philippines
Coffee Network (Bogota)- The freeze-dried coffee company Buencafé Liofilizado de Colombia, a unit of coffee growers federation, made inroads into the Philippines, one of the main consumers of soluble coffe in the world.
The world’s second-largest freeze-dry coffee plant, Buencafé arrived in this Southeast Asian country with a first shipment of two containers of more than 42,000 jars of traditional and decaffeinated freeze-dried coffee.
"We entered the Philippines with the premium products from our portfolio, made with Sensoria by Buencafé technology, which captures and preserves the best flavor and aroma of the bean, a revolutionary concept in the coffee industry," said Cristina Madriñán, general director of the company.
Entering this Asian market implies great growth potential, which the company aims to continue captivating the world with the quality of 100% Colombian coffee and contribute to the well-being of more than 540,000 coffee-growing families.
Creating unique references, adapted to customer needs, is another of the benefits of Sensoria by Buencafé technology, which, as is the case in the Philippine market, makes the cup profiling process more flexible, as well as the design of labels and packaging, a whole product customization scheme within the company's value strategy.
The Buencafe freeze-dried plant, located in Chinchiná Caldas, consumes 540,000 bags of 60-kg of mainly Colombian coffee, although the plant also imports beans from other origins like Brazil and some Robusta beans to yield products with different origins and tastes
Buencafé Liofilizado de Colombia is the only one of its kind in the global industry: it produces the equivalent of 24 million cups a day, and exports its products - which include coffee extract - to dozens of countries, where Colombian coffee conquers the most demanding palates.
The company closed 2020 with historical sales of almost 14,500 tons, 13% more than in 2019, and revenues of more than US$162 million, to which the first sales of products with Sensoria by Buencafé technology contributed, the growth of the Buendía brand in Colombia and Ecuador, and portfolio innovation.
One hundred percent of its profits are reinvested for the benefit of Colombian coffee growers, which includes scientific research and technological development, technical assistance and social development projects, among other collective assets.
Part of booming Colombian imports of coffee are used to produce freeze-dried coffee. For instance, Colombia is increasing importing Robusta coffee mainly from Brazil to produce soluble coffee.
Colombia imported 813,333 60-kg bags in January-June or 48,800 tonnes in January-June about three times more 296,000 bags of 60 in January-June of last year, according to figures obtained by Coffee Network from the tax office DIAN.
If Colombia maintains monthly imports of 135,555 bags, it will end the year with total coffee purchases of 1.62 million bags from overseas.
Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer and exporter, shipped 376,027 bags of 60kg, about 18 times more the 30,700 bags in the same period last year.
