Fundamentals & Weather

Outside economic drivers were the main story for natural gas in Tuesday’s trade.  Long bond interest rate hikes and equity weakness had natural gas trading over .10 cents lower before settling close to unchanged. The October contract closed at $3.009 up .012 cents.

The 6-10 day forecast sees below to much below normal temps due to Canadian high pressure centered over the Midwest. As the high pressure moves into the NE it brings cold air into the SE and MidAtlantic. The largest change was in the South as a cold front sags further south than previously expected. Not much change for the 11-15 day forecast - warmer across the Mid-Continent/Midwest ahead of Pacific low. High pressure over the East could keep temperatures cooler than normal due to onshore flow.

Estimates for tomorrow’s storage number are very wide, between 35-70 Bcf.  The average estimate of 54 BCF is higher than the 5-year average as well as last year.  If accurate, it would be higher than the five-year average addition of 36 Bcf and last year’s injection of just 16 Bcf. The surplus to the five-year average is 154 Bcf, or 5%, while the deficit to year-ago levels is 112 Bcf, or 3%. Storage currently sits at 3,217 Bcf.  Next week’s number is expected to be much higher, near 80 Bcf.

Natural gas production is coming in at 106.3 Bcf/day and trailing lower.  LNG exports are coming in at 16.3 Bcf/day, up about 1 Bcf/day from last week.  By December, LNG exports are expected to approach 19 Bcf/day due to increased demand from the Plaquemines and Corpus Christi terminals. Prices are holding up well even as overall demand is expected to fall in September by 5.8% compared to August.  Power demand is expected to drop 11% from last month as well.

Prices are up around .04 cents as near-term cold could lead to some very early heating needs at night.

The October 25 natural gas contract was down nearly .130 in Tuesday’s early trade bottoming out at a 2.869 morning low.

The October contract is trading between 10 day moving average support at 2.855 and the 40 day moving average as resistance at 3.055 on the daily continuation chart.

A breakout above the 40 day average will turn the near term trend back up with 3.140-3.150 being the next area of resistance.

If 10 day moving average support is broken, the trend will remain down with the October contract low at 2.738 becoming the next area of support followed by 2.622, the 2025 spot contract low set last week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 12

August 12 – Today’s focus is on inflation, with the July consumer price index data out this morning. We have this, and one more month of data, ahead of the next Federal Reserve meeting. Of course, headlines from the Middle East and the Black Sea wars also have an ongoing influence on the markets. Stock futures posted gains this morning, while the VIX traded just below 15. The dollar index traded near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.66%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.18%. WTI crude oil is trading near $83, while Brent trades near $88 per barrel. The grain and oilseed markets rebounded from yesterday’s losses ahead of today’s highly anticipated WASDE crop report that is due out at Noon Eastern Time.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.
