Strong spot cheese prices on Friday propelled futures higher as trading volume remain strong with over 2,200 contracts trading as pushing as much as 40 cents higher in nearby months. Block cheese rose 7 cents to $1.68 closing at a 2024 high while barrels were up 5 cents to $1.66 which is a penny off the 2024 high. With nearby May trading nearly at $18 this morning, spot cheese still has some work to do to justify that kind of price but for now it seems as though demand for fresh loads of cheese and a growing concern about bird flu cases is causing a mix of new futures buying and short covering.

Spot butter was steady last week with prices finishing right were they had started at $2.92. Futures also stayed pretty steady last week as prices Friday traded 1-2 cents higher on light volume with roughly 100 contracts trading.

Spot nonfat finished lower on the week as it approaches the lows seen In late March. Thursday and Friday saw good trading with nearly 400 contracts trading Friday as it was a good two sided trade of buying and selling as open interest fell by 23 contracts which most of the new buying seem to come in 2025. Nonetheless, the 2nd half 2024 strip on an average is making contract lows as the forward curve continues to flatten out.

The USDA will release the March Milk Production report today and I expect U.S. production to be down 1.2% from last year. That is a slight improvement from -1.3% in February, but we are lapping over poor production in March last year as flooding hit California (which was down 2.2% in March last year). I expect the dairy herd expanded by 5,000 head between February and March, but that would still leave it down 1.0% from last year. Production per cow is forecast at -0.2%, slightly better than the -0.4% in February which is driven by that weak comparable in March last year. There is a lot of room for surprises in this report. It is a quarterly report with a more rigorous methodology so some cows could appear or disappear, and on top of that we have the uncertainty around the mooflu and the potential that could have on TX/NM milk production for the month.

After softening a bit in February, the protein in milk pooled on the Federal Orders bounced back a bit for March. Fat content remained strong in March. Combined fat+protein in the milk was up 1.6% from last year in March. So even if headline milk production is down 1.2%, component adjusted production would be up about 0.4%.

Chinese imports for March were much weaker than expected, down 21.1% from last year compared to my forecast of 0% to +5%. It’s bearish.
