Markets React as Weak Data Resets Fed Cut Expectations

By: Fiona Cincotta, Senior Market Analyst

U.S. equity markets have entered December with an unusual mix of strength and vulnerability as soft labor and manufacturing readings reshape expectations for monetary policy. Investors are recalibrating their assumptions about how quickly the Federal Reserve may ease conditions after data pointed to the weakest ADP payrolls figure in eighteen months. Momentum has lifted major indices back toward multi-week highs, yet the recovery carries the imprint of data-driven repricing rather than fundamental growth. The stakes now rest on whether incoming indicators reinforce or challenge the emerging belief that the Fed must act sooner than previously anticipated.

Fiona Cincotta, StoneX Senior Market Analyst, analyzes how weakening economic signals are pushing traders toward more aggressive rate cut expectations and reshaping short-term equity dynamics.

Key Themes

  • Soft labor and manufacturing data sharply increased the perceived likelihood of a near-term rate cut.
  • Accelerating rate expectations have driven the bulk of the recent equity rebound.
  • Market momentum remains sensitive to whether incoming data confirms or challenges this dovish shift.

How Weak Data Is Driving Policy Repricing

Recent labor and manufacturing releases have altered the policy landscape by signaling softness at a pace not anticipated earlier in the quarter. Fiona noted that ADP payrolls “fell by 30,000 this week”, marking their lowest reading in eighteen months and accelerating the dovish turn in rate expectations. She also highlighted that ISM manufacturing readings were “a little bit weaker”, reinforcing the sense that economic momentum is losing traction. These signals have pushed the probability of a December rate cut to nearly ninety percent, reshaping near-term positioning across risk assets.

Why Market Momentum Hinges on Incoming Indicators

Even as equities recover from November lows, their trajectory remains tightly bound to the flow of new economic data. Fiona emphasized that traders are looking ahead to PCE inflation because “cooler than expected… could see the S&P 500 push up towards the 6920 record high levels”. She also pointed out the risk that a cut framed in more cautious language could curb enthusiasm, stating that Powell may adopt “a more hawkish cut” to bridge divisions within the committee. This interplay between expectation and communication underscores how narrow the runway is for further gains.
