Peru Coffee Exports in January Plummets 61.8% On Year

Coffee Network (Bogotá)- Peru shipped 147,267 bags of 60-kg in January, the lowest level recorded since 2020, and down from 385,790.3 bags in January 2024, according to the Peruvian coffee and cocoa chamber.

The drop represents a decrease of 61.8% on the year, while in terms of value, shipments totaled $34.5 million, 64% less than in the same period of the previous year, despite a 52% increase in the average price, which stood at $5.43 per kilogram.

January is an intermediate-level export month within the annual cycle of Peruvian coffee. However, the results for January 2025 have been significantly lower compared to the records of recent years, according to the chamber, using information from the import-export data company Veritrade.

This beginning of the year reflects the lower availability of Peruvian coffee in the market, in a context of competition with Colombian and Central American coffees, the chamber added.

The Peruvian harvest began in March and ended in September.

“The global context continues to mark the dynamics of the sector. Despite the lower supply, prices have reached high levels, driven by uncertainty in major producing countries such as Brazil and Vietnam,” the coffee and cocoa chamber added.  On the New York Stock Exchange, the price of coffee closed January at an average of 376.88 cents per pound, reflecting a significant increase compared to the previous year. This trend of high prices is expected to continue in the coming months, given the deficit in global supply.

The global coffee market began 2025 with concerns about supplies from major exporters. In Brazil, forest fires and high temperatures affected production, while Vietnam experienced adverse weather problems. The recovery of the Brazilian supply is not expected to be sufficient to balance the market, prolonging volatility until 2026, the chamber added.

At the price level, the New York Stock Exchange quote showed a substantial increase, reaching 376.88 cents per pound in January 2025, compared to 189.02 cents in January 2024. Consequently, the FOB export price also increased to 261.20 USD/quintal.

By exporters, the largest shipper of Peruvian coffee was Perales Huancaruna with 27,845 bags, followed by Olam Agro Peru with 25,544 bags. This was followed by Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Prosperidad de Chirinos with 7,359 bags and Café Monteverde with 5,747 bags.

Top Export Destinations

Peruvian coffee reached 33 destinations in January 2025. The United States led imports with 22% of shipments equivalent to 1,502 tons at an average price of $5.02 per kilogram, followed by Germany with  1,005 tons at an average of  $5.19 per kilogram). Belgium was next with 764 tons, $5.17 per kilogram.

Soluble Coffee Imports: A Dynamic Market

The soluble coffee market in Peru maintained its dynamism in January 2025, with an increase in the import of finished products. Soluble coffee imports reached a significant volume, with CIF values that reflect a greater demand in the local market. A relevant aspect is the comparison with national consumption, where it is estimated that per capita coffee consumption has exceeded 1 kg when imports are included. However, if only national consumption is considered without imports, this value still does not reach this mark. The main suppliers were Colombia and Brazil, consolidating their presence as the main suppliers.
