Peru’s cocoa exports down 38.8% in January-February On Year
Bogota (Commodities Network)- Peru’s cocoa bean exports totaled 7,711 tonnes of cocoa, down 38.8% from the 12,605 tonnes in the same period last year, according to the Peruvian Coffee and Cocoa Chamber.
In February, Peru exported 4,894 tonnes, followed by 4,830 tonnes in January 2026.
The decline in volume, combined with sharply lower international prices, pushed export revenue down 68.8% on the year to US$40.76 million (FOB). The average export price fell to US$5,284.93 per tonne, a 49% decrease compared with the exceptionally high levels recorded a year earlier.
The contraction follows an extraordinary performance in 2025, when Peru exported 113,297 tonnes in the January–December period, up 17.03% from 96,810 tonnes in 2024.
The chamber noted that the simultaneous decline in both volume and prices amplified the impact on exportr revenues, resulting in a sharper contraction in value than in physical shipments. It added that January-February 2025 figures were strongly supported by record international prices, while the January-February 2026 results reflect a market normalization, with price accounting for a larger share of the drop in export value than volume.
The Netherlands remained the top destination in the first two months, importing 2,430 tonnes, equivalent to 31.52% of total shipments. Exports to the Dutch market were valued at US$12.11 million.
The United States ranked second, with 2,217 tonnes (28.77% of total volume) valued at US$10.56 million.
Italy was the third-largest buyer, importing 990 tonnes (12.96%), totaling US$5.53 million.
Belgium followed with 765 tonnes (9.92%), valued at US$4.37 millio, while Malaysia ranked fifth with 526 tonnes (6.83%), valued at US$2.52 million at US$4,590 per tonne.
“The top five destinations accounted for 89.83% of the total volume in the table, highlighting a market basket highly concentrated in key destinations across Europe, North America, and Asia. Moreover, when considering the two main destinations together, the Netherlands and the United States absorbed 60.25% of the total volume, reinforcing their importance within the sector’s trade structure,” it said
Cocoa By-Products Trade
In January-February 2026, Peru exported 7.072.823 kilograms of cocoa by-products, generating US$62.41 million in FOB revenue at an average price of US$8.82/kg.
Cocoa powder was the leading product by volume, with 2.444.601 kg (36.6% of total shipments), valued at US$27.14 million at US$11.10/kg.
Cocoa butter accounted for 2.100.879 kg (25.7%) and generated the highest value at US$17.19 million, with an average price of US$8.18/kg, above the overall average.
Other products included:
- Cake: 910,709 kg (14.7%) – US$11.47 million – US$12.60/kg
- Chocolate: 324,946 kg (5.4%) – US$2.96 million – US$9.10/kg
- Nibs: 278,914 kg (4.5%) – US$3.06 million – US$10.96/kg
- Husk: 1,012,774 kg (13.1%) – US$592,432 – US$0.58/kg
Cocoa butter and cocoa powder together accounted for 67% of total by-product export value, underscoring their central role in Peru’s industrial cocoa segment.
Imports and Trade Balance
Peru imported 1,952,964 kg of cocoa by-products in January-February, valued at US$16.82 million (CIF), with an average price of US$8.61/kg.
Chocolate represented the largest share of imports at 1,216,036 kg valued at US$9.93 million.
Other imports included:
- Cocoa powder: 546,408 kg (34.9%) – US$4.55 million – US$8.99/kg
- Cocoa butter: 102,000 kg – US$1.41 million – US$13.83/kg

The trade structure highlights Peru’s role as an exporter of intermediate industrial inputs — such as cocoa butter, powder and cake — while importing a higher share of finished chocolate products, reinforcing its position as a processor and supplier of semi-processed cocoa derivatives.
