Torrential Rains In January in Colombia Disrupted Flowering

Coffee Network (Bogota)- Torrential rains across Colombia’s main coffee-producing regions in January have disrupted flowering, a critical stage for forecasting the size of the main harvest expected in the last quarter of the year, coffee growers said.

Excess rainfall has affected plantations in Huila, Antioquia and Cauca, the country’s first-, second- and fourth-largest coffee-producing departments. In Huila, some coffee-growing areas recorded up to 200 millimeters of rain, according to growers.

“Huila typically sees flowering between January and March, but the heavy rainfall has delayed this process,” said Mauricio Rivera, general manager of major coffee cooperative Coocentral.

In Antioquia, flowering has yet to begin due to persistent rains, coffee grower and exporter Juan Álvaro Arboleda said. Similar conditions are affecting Quindío, another key coffee-producing department.

Beyond coffee, the rains have caused widespread damage. In Antioquia, rivers have overflowed, affecting around 2,000 families, authorities said. In the Urabá Antioqueño region, near the Caribbean coast, rainfall has also damaged banana and pineapple plantations, according to local leader Freddy Marín. Antioquia’s governor said 13 municipalities have been severely hit by the rainy season.

In Valle del Cauca, heavy rains have affected municipalities including Jamundí, Guacarí, Trujillo, Riofrío, El Águila and Tuluá. At least 25 municipalities in the department are under a state of emergency, eight of which have reported recent damage.

The Huila Departmental Office for Disaster Risk Management said the atypical rainfall recorded at the start of 2026 is the result of several overlapping climate phenomena affecting much of Colombia.

According to IDEAM, Colombia’s weather agency, the conditions are driven by three main factors: a humid air mass moving from the Amazon toward the Andean region, La Niña-related conditions, and an active convective phase of the Madden–Julian Oscillation. Together, these have increased atmospheric moisture, promoting persistent rainfall and intense downpours over short periods.

“These conditions not only increase total precipitation but also raise the risk of flash floods, landslides and mudslides,” said Jorge Chaparro, a geologist with the Huila Office for Disaster Risk Management.

Soil saturation has further worsened impacts by reducing infiltration capacity and terrain stability, particularly in steep rural areas, along tertiary roads and near riverbeds and streams, authorities said.

The Huila Governor’s Office and local disaster risk agencies said they are monitoring hydrometeorological conditions and coordinating with municipal councils to respond to emergencies and mitigate risks to the population.

Colombia’s main coffee harvest typically runs from September to December in Huila, Antioquia, Caldas, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda and Quindío. Torrential rains since late last year have disrupted flowering, raising concerns over production volumes later this year.
