Is Market Reality Outpacing Persistent Recession Fears?

StoneX’s Global Head of Retail Dealing Alex Ridgers joins Fiona Cincotta to dissect the apparent contradiction between upbeat equity performance and persistent recession chatter.

Key Takeaways

  • Equities have rebounded as hard data stays resilient despite tariff headlines
  • Bank of England and Federal Reserve are reluctant to cut without clear evidence of a downturn
  • Historical patterns show markets often fall before recessions, creating post-slide opportunities

Sentiment vs Reality

Ridgers sees “market reality… quite positive” over the past fortnight, buoyed by a Chinese rate cut, while headlines stay gloomy. He notes CEOs publicly admit to “guesstimates” amid uncertainty—evidence that caution, not collapse, dominates boardrooms.

Tariffs and the Uncertainty Premium

One month on from new U.S. tariffs, Ridgers argues that the absence of visible damage tempers worst-case fears: “We haven’t seen any definitive proof… that there is going to be a downturn”. Stockpiling costs may have dented recent U.S. growth figures, but future sales could offset the hit, muting the shock.

Central Banks: Stubborn but Poised

The Bank of England’s quarter-point cut met dissent from two MPC members, reflecting what Ridgers calls “stubbornness” born of past mis-timing. Trump-era uncertainty offers “a get-out-of-jail-free card” for future easing without losing credibility. Across the Atlantic, Jerome Powell keeps rates unchanged: “We haven’t seen any reason to cut”. Both banks demand clear evidence before acting.

Timing the Recession Trade

Recession talk needn’t scare investors. Historically, “the market move happens before the recession”. With the Nasdaq already off its highs, Ridgers suggests chronology matters: assess whether news is explaining past price action or driving the next leg. In his view, downturn prints can mark “a good point to buy because the market move has happened”.
