Weather Shocks in China and Europe Shake Global Wheat Markets

Wheat markets are in turmoil as China’s main growing regions experience extreme heat and dryness lingers across Europe and Australia, according to Bertrand Oesterle, StoneX VP of Clearing and Execution Sales.

Key Takeaways

  • Chinese heatwave and dry weather threaten global wheat supplies
  • U.S. and Russian crops show mixed signals as funds cover shorts
  • Corn and oilseeds face uncertainty pending EPA decisions and weather trends

Wheat’s China Catalyst

Wheat prices have surged in recent weeks, driven by extreme heat in China’s northern plains and persistent dryness in other key producers. “China had a deficit in moisture for the northern Chinese plains. And 25% of the area is affected,” Oesterle explained. Government warnings about hot winds and record temperatures in Hebei and Henan provinces have intensified concerns. The wheat filling stage’s timing remains in question, dividing market bulls and bears over the potential for significant yield losses of up to 20–30%.

USDA reports and local Chinese estimates differ, and Oesterle notes, “We may not be anywhere near those figures, and it may impact the global stocks overall because China is a producer that eats its own crop. And if China comes to the import market... it could have an impact”. This has forced funds to cover short positions and shifted international buying strategies.

Europe and Australia: Mixed Prospects

In Europe, the situation hinges on upcoming rainfall. “We still have some dry patches, especially in northern Germany... Now we have rain in the forecast. We just need to find out if that rain is going to be sufficient,” said Oesterle. While the continent appears to be on a recovery path, certain regions remain at risk. Meanwhile, Australia is just beginning its planting season but is facing very dry conditions in the south.

International buyers in regions like Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt are monitoring these developments and may step up tender activity in anticipation of tighter global supply.

U.S., Russia, and Argentina are Balancing the Scales

The U.S. wheat crop is currently in strong condition, with winter wheat rated 52% good to excellent and Kansas’s yield estimates above the five-year average. “Spring crop being 82% planted so far... well above the five year average,” Oesterle highlighted.

Russia presents a split outlook: “The bears are really focusing on spring wheat in Russia... 85 to 90,000,000 million tonne crop. Now, conversely, the bulls are saying... production is 79 to 83 million tons”. Heavy rains in Argentina and planting delays in Kazakhstan add further uncertainty to global balances.

Corn, Oilseeds, and Biofuel Dynamics

Attention in corn and oilseeds is turning to the imminent U.S. EPA decision on biodiesel blending, with speculation over proposed volumes causing swings in soybean oil markets. “The EPA has finally sent its, suggestions to the White House, so we know that it’s coming,” Oesterle noted. Fast planting progress in U.S. corn and soybeans contrasts with weather and geopolitical risks, including the Israel-Iran situation affecting crude and related markets.

Finally, new trade moves such as Brazil’s agreement to sell DDGS to China signal ongoing competition in global feed markets.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 10

August 10 - Stocks traded quietly mixed to weaker through much of the morning as investors weigh Middle East war / peace headlines with artificial intelligence concerns / opportunities. Ironically, the VIX is trading near 15, putting it just barely above 2026 lows, despite the high level of geopolitical risks and AI concerns. The dollar index continues to consolidate largely between 99.5 and 100.0 after the late July break in what appeared to be Japanese central bank currency intervention. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.70%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.24%. WTI crude oil is trading near $81 at this hour, while Brent trades near $87 per barrel on the geopolitical risks. The grain and oilseed markets are mixed ahead of Wednesday's big USDA WASDE crop report.
