Tracing electricity back to a renewable source is a growing challenge. Ramos explains that “when electricity is injected into the grid, there is no way to really differentiate between what is renewable and what’s not”. To solve this, companies rely on energy attribute certificates (EACs), such as Guarantees of Origin in Europe or RECs in North America, to make credible claims about renewable energy use. Each certificate corresponds to one megawatt-hour of renewable generation, with details like technology type and generation period essential for traceability.
Companies must address Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions—each with different requirements and implications. Ramos notes, “Our main role is supporting our clients in meeting their needs, reaching their objectives for either their scope 1, 2, and 3 requirements”.
