What a Ukraine Peace Deal Could Mean for Global Energy
Marco Saggese, StoneX VP of Clearing and Execution Sales, discusses how the Ukraine conflict transformed energy flows and what a peace settlement could bring.
Key Takeaways
Sanctions reshaped global oil and gas flows, boosting U.S. exports and shifting Russia toward Asia
A peace deal could alter energy balances but Europe remains wary of reliance on Russia
China has become pivotal in determining Russia’s energy future and Western policy responses
How Sanctions Reshaped Energy Flows
Western sanctions forced Russia to redirect oil and gas away from Europe and the U.S. As Saggese explained, “the market share of the Russian export to Europe completely collapsed”. Europe turned to the U.S. and Middle East while Russia deepened ties with India, China and Turkey.
The Prospects of a Peace Deal
If peace were reached, Russia would press for sanctions to be lifted and seek to reclaim European market share. Yet Saggese noted that Europe would remain cautious, maintaining diverse supply routes to avoid dependence. Pricing and logistics would determine how quickly flows realign.
The Likely Scenario
Saggese suggested compromise is more probable than a full deal, “This would probably end up with the sanctions remaining in place”. and existing supply chains may remain largely intact. Russia would continue exporting heavily to Asia while Europe maintains its new mix of suppliers.
The Strategic Role of China
China’s role has grown as it absorbs much of Russia’s displaced oil. As Saggese highlighted, “China has become extremely important in the decision making for the Western world”. This positions China as a decisive force in shaping future energy trade and geopolitical outcomes.
