Global Fertilizer Tensions Build as India Buys and U.S. Targets Russia
Josh Linville, StoneX VP of Fertilizer, breaks down the key pressures reshaping global fertilizer supply chains.
Key Takeaways
India’s urea tender signals strong demand for global fertilizer
U.S. sanctions on Russian UAN could tighten global markets
Low U.S. phosphate imports risk shortfall ahead of fall season
India’s Urea Tender Sets the Tone
India is expected to purchase around 2.5 million tons in its latest urea tender, a significant share of its projected needs through January. “If they do get 2.5 million tons, do they only have half a million tons to buy for the rest of the year?” Linville explained, noting the tender’s outcome will shape near-term supply balances.
Sanctions on Russian Fertilizer Raise Global Risks
Potential new U.S. sanctions on Russian UAN exports could reshape trade flows. “If Russia can no longer access the U.S. system, there’s no really other market out there to go after” Linville warned. Such a move would ripple across North America, Europe, Australia and beyond.
UAN Prices Outpace Urea and NH3
North American UAN prices are now trading at a notable premium to urea and NH3. Linville highlighted the structural issues behind this trend, including low inventories, strong demand and upcoming production turnarounds. “It is actively trying to push that demand to urea, to anhydrous to something else” he said.
Phosphate Imports Remain Weak
Trade data showed very low U.S. phosphate imports in July. With tariffs and duties limiting supply from key producers, the domestic market could face severe shortages if demand does not ease.
