Eric Rose, Head of Digital Asset Execution at StoneX Digital LLC, explains how stablecoins function, why instant transfers matter, and how regulation is shaping their adoption.
In the early days of digital asset trading, all pairs traded against Bitcoin without a dollar equivalent. Stablecoins such as Tether and later Circle’s USDC provided a dollar-backed store of value that supported wider adoption. “The core thesis of the stablecoin is that it is backed by holdings that are stable” notes Rose.
For stablecoins to function as reliable digital dollars, investors must know the assets behind them. Typically, regulated US stablecoins are backed by short-term treasuries and money market instruments. “Having that core holding of liquid visible assets is really the underpinning of trust within the ecosystem”.
Traditional banking wires can take days to clear, but stablecoins enable 24/7 global payments, including weekends. Rose believes that “bringing that peer to peer connectivity of instantaneous money movement is really critical” [03:42]. For businesses and individuals, this efficiency lowers costs and removes banking delays.
The Genius Act introduces requirements for stablecoin issuers to hold liquid assets and publish audits, addressing earlier concerns around transparency. “The Genius Act helps to move us further into that trust level” [06:00]. While Tether and Circle dominate today, the market may consolidate around a handful of issuers as banks and institutions explore their own coins.
