After months of weak performance, the global cotton market may be approaching a turning point. Tightening US yields, potential monetary easing, and improving trade relations could all provide a lift to prices. This article examines the factors that may help rebalance supply and stimulate new demand across global cotton markets.
Raphael Bulascoschi, StoneX Brazil Market Intelligence Analyst, outlines how supply constraints, interest rate cuts, and renewed trade dialogue could help restore balance and spark renewed demand in the cotton market.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Uncertain US yields could limit supply in the coming months.
Lower interest rates may support apparel demand and consumption.
Trade normalization could help restore US export competitiveness.
Bulascoschi noted that this season’s US crop remains uncertain, with yield variation likely to influence prices in the short term. As he explained, “we still see some uncertainty regarding US yields for the 25/26 crop”. Any reduction in acreage or lower yields could tighten supply, reversing some of the downward pressure seen in recent months. With stock levels already elevated, even modest production cuts could shift sentiment in futures markets.
Monetary and Trade Policy Could Lift Cotton Demand
Global economic policy may also play a role in reviving demand. “If the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates later this year, this could support economic activity and boost apparel consumption” , Bulascoschi said. Stronger consumer spending would lift textile orders and drive higher cotton usage across Asia. He added that “any improvement in the United States–China trade relations would be very positive for the US export outlook”, suggesting diplomacy and trade normalization could help restore balance to global markets.
