Talk of a strategic fertilizer reserve has put North American crop input supply back on the political agenda, but stockpiling is only one answer to the problem it is meant to solve. Expanding U.S. nitrogen fertilizer production, by turning more of the continent's abundant natural gas into finished nitrogen at home, offers a more durable route to secure supply than warehousing product. That matters because farmers across North America depend on nitrogen every season, and imported tons are exposed to production hiccups abroad. The choice between storing fertilizer and building the capacity to make it shapes how resilient the farm economy is when global supply breaks down.
Josh Linville, StoneX VP of Fertilizer, oversees the firm's global fertilizer department, including its fertilizer trade desk and its analysis of fertilizer markets around the globe. His work as a commodity broker centers on North American and global crop input dynamics, which places the nitrogen, phosphate and potash supply chains behind this debate squarely within his coverage.
Key Themes from the Discussion
North America has abundant natural gas, the key input for nitrogen fertilizer.
Large-scale refrigerated ammonia storage demands enormous energy, a heavy cost for nitrogen stockpiles.
New nitrogen plants take years to build, ranking behind potash in the supply-security order.

Nitrogen Production Beats Ammonia Storage for U.S. Supply Security
Domestic nitrogen fertilizer production offers the U.S. a sturdier supply buffer than stockpiling, because holding nitrogen in storage at scale carries a heavy energy bill. Anhydrous ammonia can be kept for long periods, yet Linville points out that "can you store it a long time? Yes, but the energy required for that, it's just enormous" when the tanks are large-scale refrigerated facilities rather than retail nurse tanks. Specifically, the natural gas that feeds nitrogen plants is plentiful across the U.S. and Canada, and much of it leaves the continent in its raw state. Upgrading more of that gas into finished nitrogen at home would cut reliance on imports and could turn North America into an exporter of nitrogen fertilizer.
Nitrogen Capacity Takes Years and Ranks Behind Potash on Speed
"Next up is probably going to be nitrogen. That's still going to be years down the road, right? Let's face it, building production is not a quick thing," Linville says of the order in which North American fertilizer supply could be shored up. Potash comes first because Canada already dominates global production, so a firm trade relationship delivers stability quickly. Nitrogen sits second, whereas phosphate trails because it depends on access to phosphate rock and long-term supply agreements abroad. For farmers, the ranking means the nitrogen fix is real but slow, so nitrogen supply security rests on decisions made well before new plants run.
Anhydrous Inventories Show Why Nitrogen Capacity Matters
Tight anhydrous ammonia inventories illustrate what a thin domestic nitrogen cushion looks like in practice. The fertilizer year began with low stocks, evidenced by one of the two major suppliers skipping its usual summer fill program and reserving its limited tons for premium-priced fall prepay. Rising corn acreage talk adds fresh nitrogen demand on top of that snug supply. According to Linville, "they didn't even have a summer fill program. They kept the tons that they had for fall prepaid," a sign of how little slack nitrogen supply carries when demand grows.
