Coffee Exports Through Colombian Ports Fall in First Half

Coffee Network (Bogota) – Colombia exported 217,811 tonnes of coffee in the first half of the year, down 7.6% from the same period a year ago when ports handled 235,625 tonnes of premium coffee, according to figures from the government transportation authority Supertransporte.

Yet figures are sharply higher than the 193,514 tonnes shipped in the first half of 2024.

Colombia’s largest port on the country’s Pacific,  Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura (SPB), handled 88,797 tonnes of excelso coffee during the first half of the year, down by 1.6% over the same period last year when it shipped 90,247 tonnes, according to figures from Supertransporte.

But coffee shipments are higher than the 74,861 tonnes of excelso coffee shipped in January-June 2024.

Coffee exports through Buenaventura ports will fall in August-September after Colombia reported a 7.2 earthquake that shutdown the majority of ports during the days after the quake on August 10. It took about a week to normalize operations at the majority of the ports because the road that connects Cali with Buenaventura also shutdown for three days following landslides after the tremor.

SPB also exported 42,101 tonnes of soluble coffee during the first half, down 9.6% from 46,595 tonnes of soluble coffee in the comparative period.

It is estimated that about 60% of coffee exports are dispatched from Pacific ports located in the Buenaventura municipality.

Coffee shipments through the Caribbean Cartagena port of Sociedad Portuaria de Cartagena fell 10% to 19,403 tonnes of excelso coffee in the first half, down from 21,625 tonnes in the same period last year.  This port advances construction of a new mechanized warehouse featuring robots and conveyor belts to streamline coffee handling, officials at Grupo Puerto de Cartagena said.

The new facility, spanning 7,500m², will expand the port’s storage capacity from 30,000 to 50,000 bags, enabling the Cartagena and Contecar terminals—which make up Sociedad Portuaria de Cartagena—to jointly handle up to 80,000 bags, the officials said.

According to Jean Pierre Quiroga, coordinator at Sociedad Portuaria de Cartagena, the new warehouse will use automated systems to unload coffee directly from trucks.

“Robots will move the sacks or big bags along a conveyor belt that takes them from the truck and places them directly on storage shelves,” Quiroga said. “Currently, unloading is done manually, with workers carrying bags on their backs.”

He added that the expansion aims to boost capacity and resilience in case of disruptions at Buenaventura port or shipping delays along the U.S. East Coast. In 2021, congestion forced about 250 trucks loaded with coffee to queue outside the port—far above the usual 30–50 trucks.

Coffee exports through the Sociedad Port of Santa Marta jumped to 3,723 tonnes, up from 122 tonnes in the same period last year and compared with 203 tonnes in the same period in 2024.

Colombia produced 12.58 million bags of 60-kg in the last 12-months through August, down 15% on the year.
