Currency Breakouts Need Momentum Behind Them or the Advance Stalls

By: Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist

The U.S. dollar has cleared a resistance shelf against the Swiss franc that capped it earlier in the year, and the advance now runs close to 3.9% above the August low. FX breakout confirmation comes from momentum agreeing with price rather than from the level being broken, which is the distinction that separated this attempt from the two that failed before it. Twice this year the pair pushed through similar territory on six and seven day runs, and both times the advance faded within days. What changed is the momentum picture across the weekly and daily charts, which is now moving with the trend instead of lagging it.

Michael Boutros is a StoneX Media Senior Market Analyst with more than 20 years spent trading foreign exchange, commodities and equity indices, and he applies a structured technical approach across multiple time frames with a medium-term, event-driven focus. He tracks currency market structure and the policy events that move it, and he has run a weekly market strategy session for over a decade.

Key Themes

  • Dollar Swiss is attempting a fourth consecutive weekly advance, roughly 3.9% above the August low.
  • Weekly momentum is testing the highest readings of the year and holding constructive territory.
  • Daily relative strength is pressing toward 70 for the first time since June.

Momentum Readings Separate Durable Currency Breakouts From Failed Ones

"The difference in this approach though is that daily momentum is now trying to close above 70 for the first time since June", Boutros says of the Dollar Swiss advance. Relative strength pushing through that threshold matters because it shows buying pressure broadening as price extends, rather than a smaller pool of buyers carrying the move. On the weekly chart the same signal appears at a higher degree, with momentum "testing the highs of the year" and holding what he describes as constructive territory. Consequently, a trader reading the pair gets confirmation from two time frames at once, which is a materially different setup from price clearing a level in isolation. The practical impact is that the burden shifts, because a breakout carrying momentum has to be disproved rather than proved.

Currency Advances Stall When the Rally Outruns Its Momentum Base

Dollar Swiss has produced two comparable streaks this year and neither held. According to Boutros, "the last few times we've seen six or seven day rallies, we have seen a little bit of a setback", with one stalling at the previous yearly high and an earlier six day run correcting more briefly. In contrast to those attempts, the current advance arrives with daily momentum expanding rather than flattening, which is why the pullback pattern is not automatically repeating. Traders watching for the point where the structure breaks have a defined reference, since "a break below this level is what would be needed to suggest that a more significant high is in place". Until that happens, the setback risk is a timing question rather than a trend question.
