Global Oil Trade Faces Strait of Hormuz Shock

By: Razan Hilal, Market Analyst

As of March 2, 2026, crude oil markets are reacting to renewed geopolitical escalation centered on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategically significant energy corridors in the world. The sudden repricing of supply risk follows reported regional attacks and heightened tensions affecting Middle East infrastructure. Global oil trade flows are particularly sensitive to this corridor because it channels a substantial share of seaborne crude and gas exports. Consequently, the latest escalation is not simply a regional development but a structural risk event for global energy markets.

Razan Hilal, FOREX.com Market Analyst based in Dubai, has been tracking crude oil technical structures across multiple cycles and regional shocks. Her proximity to Middle East market developments and experience analyzing multi-year price channels provide direct insight into how geopolitical disruptions translate into technical breakouts and inflation-sensitive price levels.

Key Themes

  • Between 20 and 30 percent of global oil and gas supply transits through the Strait of Hormuz, amplifying disruption risk.
  • WTI crude rebounded toward June 2025 highs as geopolitical escalation intensified over the weekend.
  • Brent crude approaching $42 could open extension toward the $89 to $90 zone if resistance breaks.

Strait of Hormuz Disruption Risk Drives Crude Oil Repricing

Strait of Hormuz disruption risk is pushing crude oil prices back toward prior conflict-era highs as markets factor in potential export constraints. Razan Hilal notes that the waterway "allows the passage of 20 to 30% of the world's oil and gas supply", underscoring the scale of exposure embedded in global trade flows. Consequently, even the threat of restricted access introduces volatility into pricing models, freight rates, and hedging strategies across energy markets. As crude oil retests levels last seen during prior Middle East escalation, participants are forced to consider whether supply insecurity could persist beyond the immediate headlines.

Brent and WTI Levels Signal Broader Inflation Implications

Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate crude are approaching technical thresholds that could transform a geopolitical spike into a longer-term inflationary impulse. Hilal emphasizes that a close above key resistance would represent a "potential prolonged bullish breakout or structural shift", specifically referencing the importance of moves toward $80 in WTI and $82 in Brent. As a result, sustained gains could alter global rate expectations, particularly if energy costs feed through to consumer price indices. Conversely, a failure to hold above June 2025 highs may signal a corrective pattern, but the underlying Strait of Hormuz supply risk would remain a central variable in crude oil pricing.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

WTI and Brent Crude Are Now Reading the Strait of Hormuz Differently

WTI and Brent crude are moving to different beats as a possible U.S. Iran deal reshapes the oil market. The two benchmarks are pricing Strait of Hormuz risk in their own ways, and the gap between them says a lot about where crude goes next.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
