Brent crude jumped 5% in a single session on a fresh U.S. threat toward Iran, a reminder that Donald Trump can still move markets with one statement. The U.S. midterm elections are shifting market focus toward longer-running policy questions, namely the U.S. deficit, tariffs and an end to war, as prediction markets lean toward Democrats taking control of Congress. For traders, that points to fewer single-headline swings and a wider mix of drivers across stocks, bonds and oil.

Midterm Odds Tilt Market Influence Away From Donald Trump
Prediction markets give Democrats roughly a 62% chance of controlling both the House and the Senate in the U.S. midterm elections, pointing to a smaller role for Donald Trump in setting market direction. That matters because much of the recent price action traced straight back to White House decisions, from tariffs to Iran. "We're starting to see that sort of loosening of Donald Trump's power, which in turn will loosen his impacts on the market," Ridgers says. Trump remains in office and can still move Brent crude sharply in a single session, so the midterm shift is a change of degree rather than an exit. For traders, the midterm elections mark the point where markets, rather than one decision-maker, take back more control of pricing.
U.S. Deficit and Tariff Policy Shape Markets After the Midterms
According to Ridgers, "There has been such a drive for Donald Trump almost to define himself in history just by saying growth, growth, growth at any cost, spend at any cost, whatever it takes." The U.S. deficit and tariff policy now become the longer-term questions for markets after the midterm elections, as investors look at whether a Democratic-controlled Congress curbs spending, changes course on tariffs or pushes toward an end to war. Those policy questions reach across Treasury yields, oil and equities at once rather than through a single headline. As a result, traders who are confident on one theme still have to weigh a wider "melting pot" of drivers before making a trading decision.
