Strong Earnings Keep Geopolitical Risks Out of Focus
By: Editorial Team, StoneX Media
Global equity markets are trading at record highs despite ongoing disruptions in the Middle East and continued uncertainty surrounding energy supplies. Investors have largely shifted their attention away from geopolitical risks and toward a combination of strong corporate earnings and solid economic growth. Markets experienced a brief period of volatility during May as inflation concerns resurfaced, but those fears quickly faded as both earnings and growth data remained supportive. The result is a market environment where resilience is being rewarded while potential risks remain largely discounted.
Michael Lytle, Chief Investment Officer at StoneX Wealth Management, oversees investment strategy across global asset classes and economic cycles. His perspective is particularly relevant because it combines analysis of corporate earnings, economic growth, fixed income markets, and cross-asset risk signals that are shaping investor sentiment during the current market cycle.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Strong first quarter earnings and positive guidance continue to support equity valuations despite geopolitical uncertainty.
The Atlanta Federal Reserve GDP estimates for second quarter growth remains above 3%, reinforcing expectations for a continued economic expansion.
Energy related inflation remains a key risk that could eventually affect either corporate margins or consumer spending.
Corporate Earnings Support Equity Market Confidence
Corporate earnings continue to provide the strongest foundation for equity market confidence despite persistent geopolitical uncertainty. Lytle noted that "earnings were great and guidance was pretty good too", highlighting how companies delivered strong results even as energy markets experienced significant disruption during the quarter. Investors have found little reason to aggressively reduce risk exposure, particularly as earnings expectations for the remainder of the year remain constructive. Strong profitability validates current equity valuations and helps explain why markets have quickly recovered from periods of volatility. As long as earnings growth remains intact, geopolitical developments may struggle to generate sustained downside pressure on equities.
Energy Inflation Could Eventually Test Market Optimism
Energy inflation remains the most important risk capable of challenging the current market narrative. Lytle emphasized that "we haven't seen either" a meaningful hit to corporate profits or consumer spending, despite elevated energy costs and continued disruptions to global oil flows. He warned that higher costs must eventually pass through the economy, either reducing profit margins or weighing on household demand. As a result, investors may be underestimating the delayed effects of inflation on economic activity and corporate performance. If energy related cost pressures begin appearing in future earnings reports or consumer spending data, market confidence could face a more significant test than it has so far in 2026.
