Anthropic's IPO filing shows quarterly revenue climbing from $376 million to $16.3 billion in under two years, yet the company behind Claude also reported a net loss. Tech stocks are sliding on AI spending concerns because investors now want proof that heavy outlays on chips, data centers and computing power are turning into free cash flow, not just revenue. Meta's free cash flow turning negative for the first time since 2012 has sharpened that focus across Big Tech, and the Nasdaq has repeatedly tested a key support level. For tech stocks, the question has shifted from how fast AI revenue grows to whether that growth produces cash.
Fiona Cincotta, StoneX Senior Market Analyst, has more than 15 years of experience trading and analyzing UK, European and U.S. markets, combining fundamental and technical analysis. Her coverage spans equities, forex, commodities and crypto assets, along with the macroeconomic themes that move equity indices such as the Nasdaq.

AI Developers' Free Cash Flow Trails Revenue as Infrastructure Costs Climb
AI developers' free cash flow is trailing their revenue growth because advanced models require huge amounts of computing power, expensive chips and data center capacity. Anthropic has relied heavily on Amazon, Google and Microsoft for that capacity and is now investing more directly in its own infrastructure to gain control over costs. "Even if Anthropic can report operating profit, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will generate free cash flow that investors will be expecting," Cincotta says. With computing demand still rising, AI developers can be locked into heavy spending just to stay competitive, which keeps cash generation under pressure for tech stocks built on AI.
Big Tech Earnings Put AI Spending Returns Under Investor Scrutiny
Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon earnings are a test of whether massive AI spending is starting to generate meaningful returns, with investors focused on free cash flow, margins and demand for AI products. Meta shows what is at stake, as its shares fell sharply after free cash flow turned negative and slid again after a large stock offering to fund AI infrastructure. In contrast to the revenue-led optimism around AI, the Nasdaq has repeatedly tested a key support level, leaving tech stocks exposed to any nervousness around these results. The investment case for such huge AI investment, Cincotta observes, "increasingly depends on whether new capacity and products can actually generate enough revenue to justify this spending."
