Gold’s Resilience Amid Tariff Volatility and Economic Uncertainty from Rhona O’Connell

By: Rhona O'Connell, Head of Market Analysis

Gold’s Moment: Rhona O’Connell on How Tariffs and Fed Moves Could Reshape Markets

Key Talking Points:

  • U.S. tariffs and global retaliations escalate market uncertainty, fueling worries about stagflation
  • China is making notable shifts in its fiscal and monetary policies to brace against growing tariff pressures
  • As investors seek safety amid market turbulence, and other precious metals look shaky, gold holds steady

Escalating tensions from the latest round of U.S. tariffs have investors grappling with the growing fear of stagflation. In a recent Precious Metals Front Desk report, StoneX Head of Market Analysis for EMEA and Asia, Rhona O'Connell, addressed those fears, and their possible downstream effects on future investor behavior, including the precious metals markets.

In O'Connell's view, the escalation of tariffs, including a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico and a doubling of tariffs on China—have intensified stagflation fears and unsettled markets. As concerns over potential retaliation grow, O'Connell argues that the potential "cascade" into the retail markets "will effectively be a de facto tax increase."

These anticipated but disruptive tariff developments have shaken investor confidence, causing notable volatility across equities and commodities alike. O’Connell underscores how this anxiety is fueling volatility and triggering genuine worries over potential stagflation in the U.S. - a combination of stagnant economic growth and rising inflation.

China's response has been particularly noteworthy. By imposing counter-tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on agricultural goods such as poultry, wheat, soybeans, and pork, China has signaled its intent to defend its economic interests aggressively. O’Connell observes that China's broader economic response includes enhanced fiscal stimulus and a significant shift toward a more relaxed monetary policy—departing from its traditionally cautious strategy. Premier Li Qiang’s recent speech reinforced China's strategic focus on bolstering domestic consumption and technological resilience to mitigate external impacts.

Seeking insights into the Fed's current trajectory on interest rates, O'Connell turned to the analysis of StoneX Chief Strategist Kathryn Rooney Vera , who notes that sustained weakening of consumer spending and employment could force the Fed, potentially triggering cuts of at least 50 basis points. While this approach could stabilize the markets temporarily, Vera cautions that "it's yet to be determined" if cuts will also contribute to short-term volatility.

Rhona O’Connell points out that precious metals markets are feeling the tremors differently. Gold continues to draw investors looking for stability in uncertain times. Meanwhile, silver, platinum, and especially palladium are facing sharper swings, as industrial demand shifts and the automotive sector struggles with tariff-related disruptions.

Summing up O’Connell’s Precious Metals Front Desk report: as the weight of tariff decisions and central bank policies continues to drive precious metals markets, the actions of the U.S. Federal Reserve and China's policymakers will likely buffet investor sentiment and reshape market dynamics for the foreseeable future.
