Trump’s “Liberation Day” and the Risk of Stagflation

Fiona Cincotta, StoneX Senior Market Analyst, joined Johanna Botta to discuss President Trump’s surprise Liberation Day” tariffs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Tariffs are fueling inflationary pressures in a fragile global economy
  • Supply chains face costly disruptions as manufacturers consider reshoring and automation
  • Stagflation risks persist as slow growth and rising prices unsettle investors

The Threat of Stagflation

The latest round of tariffs from the United States and the Trump administration is posing significant macroeconomic risk. By raising import costs, higher tariffs can push prices up while economic growth tapers off. Cincotta warns that a combination of inflation and slowing expansion—a classic ‘stagflation’ scenario—poses significant challenges for both policymakers and investors. Central banks may struggle to manage rising prices without constraining growth further.

Reshaping Supply Chains

Cincotta notes that Trump’s tariffs could prompt some businesses to bring manufacturing back to the United States. Smaller firms might see initial benefits, but automation could limit job creation in the long run. She adds that a downturn in consumer confidence, paired with cutbacks in business investment, may tip the balance toward a broader slowdown if the new trade environment persists.

Currency Responses and Safe Havens

Investors appear cautious, shedding riskier assets in favor of safer alternatives. Cincotta highlights gold’s continued appeal, particularly as gold miners remain undervalued relative to the precious metal’s price. She adds that the Japanese yen is also drawing interest as a traditional safe haven, reflecting growing unease about global growth prospects.

Consumer Impact and Retaliation

Many of the Liberation Day tariffs have targeted essential goods, from steel to electronics, raising the likelihood of higher prices for everyday items. Cincotta believes that Americans could see costs climb for cars and home-related products, with knock-on effects potentially spilling over into seemingly unrelated purchases. Meanwhile, she adds that China and the European Union may retaliate, stoking fears of an escalating trade war that further dampens consumer and business confidence.
