Brazil’s Cotton Boom Reshapes Global Trade Dynamics
Raphael Bulascoschi, StoneX Brazil Market Intelligence Analyst, joins Johanna Botta to dissect a cotton market weighed down by abundant inventories and shifting trade flows.
Key Takeaways
Global ending stocks for 2024-25 are projected at pandemic-era highs
Lower U.S. plantings are offset by a modest abandonment rate
Brazil’s record harvest and tariff-driven demand pivot bolster lead over U.S.
Global Balances Still Bloated
“Even so, it's worth pointing out that inning stocks for 24/25 season are still expected to be pretty high. Actually, the highest since the pandemic.” Bulascoschi notes that the USDA’s May WASDE nudged consumption up by 0.6 % but left production almost unchanged, trimming stocks only marginally. The sheer volume—largest since 2020—continues to anchor New York futures despite year-on-year demand growth in Vietnam and Pakistan.
U.S. Crop Hinges on Weather and Abandonment
As planting concludes, traders will “focus mainly in weather and crop progress”. Although acreage is down, the USDA expects a lower abandonment rate, implying a slightly larger harvested crop and heavier domestic carry-over. Summer heat or storms could still inject volatility, yet for now, the supply outlook remains comfortable.
Brazil Extends Its Export Lead
“Brazil continues to have big exportable surplus, which keeps the country ahead of the US as the world's largest exporter.” Consecutive record harvests—up another 7% to 3.9 million t—give Brazil unmatched pricing power. Robust grower investment and coordinated government-industry market-access campaigns have entrenched its presence in China, Pakistan and Bangladesh, eroding the U.S. share.
Trade Tensions Reinforce Market Shifts
“Tariffs have really shaken up things in a number of markets. And cotton wasn't spared from all this movement.” Although Washington and Beijing have paused retaliatory duties, uncertainty lingers. With over 80% of U.S. output destined for export, any hint of renewed barriers pressures futures. Importers meanwhile, view Brazil as a politically safer origin, accelerating the re-routing of flows that began in 2018.
