ABIC PUBLISHES DATA ON COFFEE CONSUMPTION IN BRAZIL

The Brazilian Association of the Coffee Industry (ABIC), which completes 50 years and is restructuring its Certification Programs, releases data that reinforce the role of coffee as an important food for Brazilians and for the national industry. The consumption figures reveal that, despite the economic crisis generated in 2021 by the pandemic, which recovered in 2022, the demand for coffee followed its pace: even with a slight drop of 1.01% compared to the same period analyzed in the previous year.

The updating of the Certification Programs is motivated by SDA Ordinance 570/2022, in effect since January 1, 2023, and responsible for establishing the official classification standard for roasted coffee. The regulation gives room for consumer protection agencies, such as PROCONS and the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP), to act against accusations of fraud in the product.

COFFEE CONSUMPTION IN BRAZIL

Consumption reached 21.3 million bags in 2022

21.3 million bags were consumed between November 2021 and October 2022, a drop of 1.01% compared to the previous period, considering data from November 2020 to October 2021. This volume represents 41.8% of the 2022 crop, which was 50.9 million bags, according to Conab. In the previous period, the volume represented 45.3% of the harvest, which was 47.7 million bags, also considering Conab data, highlighting Brazil as the largest consumer of national coffees.

The data collected by ABIC reinforce the role of coffee as an important food for Brazilians and for the national industry and reveal that, despite the economic crisis experienced in 2021 by the pandemic, with recovery in 2022, coffee consumption followed its pace: even with the slight decrease.

Brazil maintains its position as the second largest coffee consumer in the world. The difference to the first place, held by the United States, is 4.7 million bags. When analyzing per capita consumption, it can be seen that in 2022 it was 5.96 kg per year of raw coffee and 4.77 kg per year of roasted coffee, a little lower than the previous year (4.84kg/year/inhabitant), due to the population growth.

Currently, ABIC's member industries account for 71.1% of the production of roasted coffee in beans and/or ground, and represent 86.1% of the supermarket retail market share. ABIC registers in its database more than 3,000 certified products.

SALES OF THE COFFEE INDUSTRY

It is estimated that the coffee industry sales in 2022 have reached R$23.5 billion, an increase of 54.6% if compared to 2021. This is justified by the increase in the price of the raw material, more than 120%, which had a strong impact on the industry's costs and caused part of this increase to be passed on to the retail market.

CONSUMER PRICE VARIATION

For coffee to reach the Brazilian table, the bean goes through several stages and there are many factors that impact the final price of the product found on the shelves, such as: the exchange rate, input costs, logistics, harvest volume, and socioeconomic factors.

According to a study carried out by ABIC at the stores, in 2022, the national average price increase for coffee was 35.4%, a consequence of the increase in the raw material that has been going on since 2021.

It is estimated that the slight drop in consumption may have been influenced by the increase in shelf prices and the decrease in purchasing power.

SEASONAL SALES BEHAVIOR OF THE COFFEE INDUSTRY

Coffee sales increase in the winter months and retract in the warmer periods, with lower sales volumes.

Comparing the price of the raw material, the retail price of coffee and the sales volume, it was observed that the raw material increased up to 137% until Jan/22, while the readjustment for roasted and/or ground coffee was slower, and only in the second semester of 2022 it reached the 100% level.
