CBOT Grains Daily Options Report

The White House Office of Management and Budget scheduled the first round of stakeholder meetings on the 45Z clean fuel tax credit for next week, with broad participation expected. With indirect land-use change (ILUC) removed from the carbon intensity calculation, more ethanol producers now qualify for the credit. The meetings are being viewed as an early but tangible sign that work is underway to finally resolve lingering Renewable Fuel Standard–related hurdles and bring this policy cycle to a close.

COT data out today and that will catch all the data up to date.

China’s cabinet said it reviewed a package of measures aimed at expanding domestic demand, signaling that policymakers are preparing coordinated steps to support economic growth from within rather than relying on exports. The discussion points to a focus on boosting consumer spending and encouraging business investment, likely through a mix of fiscal support and policy coordination with existing monetary easing. While this is not yet a detailed stimulus announcement, it reinforces that weak domestic demand remains a central concern for Beijing, and markets will be watching closely for concrete policies, scale, and timing to judge the real economic impact.

Reuters reported that global food prices declined slightly in December, but still ended 2025 higher overall, according to data from the FAO. The monthly dip reflected easing prices in some commodity categories, but stronger increases earlier in the year kept the annual average above 2024 levels. The report suggests that while near-term food price pressures have cooled, global food inflation remains elevated, supported by supply chain constraints, weather-related risks, and ongoing geopolitical disruptions.

Russia struck two civilian vessels in the Black Sea, according to Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, highlighting renewed risks to maritime traffic and regional trade routes. The incident underscores ongoing security threats to commercial shipping tied to the war, raising concerns about port access, insurance costs, and the safety of grain and other cargo movements from the region as hostilities continue.

Preliminary January University of Michigan consumer sentiment data showed a broad-based improvement in confidence. The headline consumer sentiment index rose to 54.0, beating expectations and marking a four-month high, while the current conditions index climbed sharply to 52.4 from 50.4, indicating consumers feel better about present economic conditions. The expectations index also edged higher to 55.0 from 54.6. However, inflation concerns remain elevated: one-year inflation expectations were unchanged at a high 4.2%, and longer-term 5-to-10-year inflation expectations increased to 3.4% from 3.2%. Overall, the report points to improving sentiment on growth and jobs, but persistent inflation expectations that could complicate the policy outlook.

Bloomberg Economics said EU member states have authorized the European Commission to sign a trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc, and while some procedural hurdles remain before full ratification, the deal is likely to be implemented. Although the direct economic gains are expected to be larger for Mercosur countries, the agreement represents a geopolitical win for the European Union by strengthening its influence in South America at a time when the United States is expanding its military presence in the region and China is deepening its economic engagement. The analysis also notes that the deal would have uneven sectoral impacts across the EU, benefiting some industries while creating pressure for others, particularly in agriculture and livestock.

Bloomberg reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Argentina has fully repaid the amount it drew from a $20 billion currency swap line with the United States under President Javier Milei’s government. As a result, the U.S. no longer holds Argentine pesos in its exchange stabilization fund, and Bessent said the transaction generated tens of millions of dollars in profit for U.S. taxpayers. The swap line, announced in September, was designed to help Argentina manage market volatility ahead of its midterm elections. Separately, Argentina also made a $4.3 billion payment on its global bonds after securing a $3 billion loan from six international banks, signaling improved near-term liquidity and debt management.

Perspective: Mid-Day Commentary for August 7

August 7 – Stocks are looking to end a strong week on a strong note, with the major indexes all in the green at the time of writing. The VIX touched a nearly seven-month low earlier in the session and remains muted as it hovers just below the 15-mark as this morning’s ugly labor market data helps ease hawkish Fed jitters. The dollar has rebounded from its nearly two-month low earlier in the session but remains in the red on the day, trading at 99.55 at the time of writing. Treasuries have had a very volatile day, with yields tanking following this morning’s Non-Farm Payrolls release but bouncing back into midday, with 30-year yields now trading at 5.209%, 10-year yields trading at 4.654%, and 2-year yields trading at 4.204%. Crude oil has risen from the morning lows as traders eye the weekend market closure for potential geopolitical developments, with nearby WTI now down only 0.2% on the day to trade around $78.10 and nearby Brent breaking into the green, up 1.25% on the day to trade above $83.50. The ags are largely mixed, with the grains and oilseeds mostly in the green, save for a mixed picture in the soy complex, while live and feeder cattle futures move in opposite directions, with the former adding to yesterday’s sharp losses and the latter attempting a rebound.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
