CEPEA: Brazil’s Arabica Harvest Reaches 70-80% of Expected Output
CoffeeNetwork (New York) - The harvesting of the 2021/22 Arabica crop is in full swing in Brazil. As of August 6, activities had reached from 70 to 80% of the output expected for the country, according to Cepea surveys. The dry weather and the lower volume to be harvested this season favored the progress of the harvesting from July onwards. Harvesting this year is late compared to that in previous years, due to the late flowering in 2020, which delayed crops development.
As a high volume has already been harvested, Brazilian coffee farmers have confirmed a crop failure in the 2021/22 season. Agents have reported harvests lower than expected in some areas, besides lower-grade beans. On the other hand, this season has been marked by beans of higher quality, favored by the dry weather during the harvesting.
As far as sales in the Brazilian spot market of Arabica, liquidity was low in the first half of August. Agents, mostly sellers, were watching out for price swings and forecasts for new cold fronts in Brazil in August, which may influence coffee pricing.
On August 13, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for Arabica coffee type 6 (delivered to São Paulo city) closed at 1,028.95 BRL (196.25 USD) per 60-kilo bag, 1.4% up from that on July 30, largely boosted by concerns about the drought in Brazil.
ROBUSTA – The harvesting of the 2021/22 crop of Robusta coffee ended in Brazil in July. Despite the dry weather, sporadic flowering from the 2022/23 season was registered in some crops in Espírito Santo and in Rondônia, favored by irrigation.
In the spot market, some deals were closed in the first half of August, mostly for the Robusta type 7/8 (lower quality), due to the recent valuations of this variety. Prices were influenced by the increases in futures contracts and the dollar appreciation. Still, agents considered liquidity low, due to the disinterest of farmers in selling the product.
In general, Robusta farmers have made cash flow this season, due to the price rises from 2020 onwards and the lower productivity of crops in the 2021/22 season. Now, many of them intend to sell the product only when in need of cash flow or when prices rise again, based on the lower supply of Arabica coffee.
On August 13, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the Robusta type 6, screen 13, Espírito Santo, closed at 631.18 BRL (120.39 USD)/bag, a staggering 8.7% up from that on July 30.

Daily coffee report

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
