Coffee Exports from Honduras Down 4.1% Year on Year
CoffeeNetwork (New York) – Data from the Coffee Exporters Association of Honduras (ADECAFEH) showed coffee exports as of June 30 totaled 4.7 million bags, down 203,000 bags or 4.1% year-on-year. Accumulated sales total 5.5 million bags, up 453,000 bags, or 8.9% year-on-year.
59.8% of exports have gone to Europe, 32.0% went to countries in America, 6.6% to countries in Asia and 1.6% to countries in Africa and Oceania. The main importing countries are: Germany 26%; United States of America 24%; Belgium 10%; France 6%; Italy 6%; other 28%.
In June, 828,000 bags were exported, 28% more compared to the 644,000 bags exported in June 2020. Some delays with shipping companies have caused the declines in the shipment figures from month to month.
ADECAFEH’s revised export forecast for this harvest is 5.4 million bags, considering a decrease in production caused by the incidence of rust in some producing departments, harvesting problems due to lack of labor and the impact of the two hurricanes in November.
In the last decade, Honduras went from 3.2 million bags in the 2009/2010 harvest to 5.4 million bags in the 2019/2020 harvest, reaching a historical record in the 2016/2017 harvest, during which 7.3 million bags were exported.
Honduras went from 230,000 hectares planted with coffee in the 2009/2010 harvest to 300,000 hectares registered in the 2019/2020 harvest, reaching a maximum of 331,000 hectares in the 2017/2018 harvest. 56% of the total planted area is distributed in the Departments of Comayagua, Copán, Lempira and El Paraíso.
