Colombia Has Enough Fertilizers For Two Months, Will Not Receive Fertilizers from Belarus

Coffee Network (Bogota) -Colombia will stop receiving fertilizers from Belarus forcing the country to seek an alternative supplier, Andres Piñero, general manager of Nitrofert, a company that plans to sell 600,000 tonnes of fertilizers this year, Piñero told Coffee Network.

Belarus exported 222,915 tonnes of fertilizers to Colombia last year, according to figures from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Belarus is a landlocked country situated in Eastern Europe. It exports used to transit through European nations and now that sanctions have come in place, Belarus will not be able to ship fertilizers to Colombia, Piñero noted.

Since October 2020, the European Union has progressively imposed restrictive measures against Belarus. The measures have been adopted in response to the fraudulent nature of the August 2020 presidential elections in the country, and the intimidation and violent repression of peaceful protesters, opposition members and journalist. Sanctions have strengthened since Russia invaded Ukraine. Belarus supports Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Colombia has enough fertilizers for two months, Piñero noted. NitroFert is negotiating with its US supplier Nitron to obtain a large contingent of fertilizers, which should be in Colombia beginning in the second half to cover the shortfall of Russia and Belarus.

Nitrofert is negotiating with fertilizers from African  nations, including Egypt and Algeria and the US. Ammonium is being negotiated with African nations and the US. NPK complex with Asian nations. Phosphorus is expected to come from Morocco.

In other news, Colombia is entering the high demand season of fertilizers in April, May and June, and the country has enough stockpiles until June. Colombia is negotiating with other nations such as the US, Morocco, Algeria, Canada, Egypt to replace fertilizers that used to come from Russia. The high demand of fertilizers in Colombia is associated with the country’s first rainy season. The second high season will run between October and December.

Colombia imported 437,876 tonnes of fertilizers from Russia last year to cover the needs of the agriculture sector including coffee, and the mandate is to replace Russia fertilizer imports with fertilizers coming from the US, China, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Marruecos and Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Russia contributed 20% of Colombia’s total fertilizer imports, according to information provided by the Ministry of Agriculture to Coffee Network.

Russia contributed with 179,006 tonnes of Urea imports, weighting 41% of total imports from the distant nation. Russia sent 72,197 tonnes of potassium chloride to Colombia, representing 16% of total Russian imports. In addition, it sent 71,436 tonnes of nitrate of ammonium. Finally, fertilizers that mixes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contributed with 38,707 tonnes.

Nitrofert has invested US$22 million to build storage houses, equipment and software to expedite the transportation chain of fertilizers.

Coffee growers as well as other agriculture products have been severely hit by skyrocketing fertilizer prices. But rising coffee prices have allowed to cushion the rising costs.

Fertilizers weight 25%-35% in the cost structure of coffee growers, Piñero noted.

“Coffee growers like the rest of the farmers are being hit by booming fertilizer costs, but they can support the rise in costs thanks to rising coffee international prices,” Piñero noted.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 10

August 10 – The world commodity markets and economy remains at risk amid two wars this morning. Tensions continue to escalate in both the Middle East and the Black Sea – risking pulling other countries into the conflicts. Stocks are down modestly this morning as we start a week of trade in which we’ll see key inflation and retail sales data following a weak jobs report this past Friday. Yet, stocks continue to trade just below record high levels, with the VIX trading near 2026 lows just above 15. The dollar index is trading near 99.7. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.68%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries are trading near 4.23%. The energy and food-based markets are firmer today amid the escalated risks. WTI crude oil is trading near $80, while Brent trades near $85 per barrel. Double-digit gains in the winter wheat markets lead the way for higher grain and oilseed prices.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
