Colombia on Track To Break A New Record in Coffee Imports in 2021

Bogota (Coffe Network )- Colombia, the world’s-largest producer of high-quality Arabica beans, is on track to import more than 1.6 million bags of 60-kg in 2021, reaching a new all-time record.

Imports of coffee grew by leaps and bounds in Colombia in the first half of the year with Brazil becoming the largest source of imported coffee.

Colombia imported 813,333 60-kg bags in January-June or 48,800 tonnes in January-June about three times more 296,000 bags of 60 in January-June of last year, according to figures obtained by Coffee Network from the tax office DIAN.

If Colombia maintains monthly imports of 135,555 bags, it will end the year with total coffee purchases of 1.62 million bags from overseas.

Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer and exporter, shipped 376,027 bags of 60kg, about 18 times more the 30,700 bags in the same period last year.

Perú, which was historically the main exporter of coffee to Colombia, continues to be displaced to the second place. Peru shipped 133,033, up from 58,416 bags in January-June, DIAN said.

Honduras exported 43,083 bags, up from just 4,233 bags in the same period last year.

Other sources of coffee imports include Vietnam.

Colombia exports all its high-quality Arabica beans, but it traditionally leaves beans affected by diseases such as broca worms or roya fungus for local consumption. However in 2015, the coffee growers’ federation lifted a ban that had forbidden exporting low-grade beans. As a result, shipments of lower-quality beans from private exporters and the federation ranged between 600,000 60-kg to 650,000 bags in 2016.

Colombia recorded historic high levels of imports in 2012, when it brought in 1.066 million 60-kg bags amid a slump of output.

After reaching record imports in 2012, the volume of coffee purchases from overseas fell to 606,500 60-kg bags in 2013, 351,000 60-kg bags in 2014 and 218,000 60-kg bags in 2015, according to figures provided by the federation.

Colombia is also importing beans to later reexport them as Colombian beans, sources noted.

Colombia is also importing more beans that usual because FNC recently said that the freeze-dried coffee plant of Buencafé Liofilizado make inroads into new products sourced with beans from different origins. FNC has said it is demanding more imports of other types of beans because the market is demanding more and more products with different cup profiles, which are achieved with mixtures of raw materials from different origins.
