Colombia’s Coffee-Producing Provinces Outlines Production In Main Harvest, Pickers Campaign
Coffee Network (Bogota)- The main harvest of Colombia’s coffee province of Antioquia, the country’s second largest coffee producing region, is promising to bring a solid output in the months ahead, so much so, that the state is moving swiftly to lure enough pickers to collect ripe cherries, the coffee committee said.
Antioquia has launched a campaign that aims to lure 230,000 coffee pickers in this north western province with the goal of collecting about 1.5 million 60-kg bags during its main harvest, this is equivalent to 80% of the coffee production for the year.
An estimate of the Committee of Coffee Growers of Antioquia, around 40,000 pickers are available in the main eight coffee producing towns because they live there. In Antioquia, by 2025, 80% of coffee production will be concentrated in the second half of the year, specifically between the months of August and December. The department contributes approximately 15% of national production. During this period, the 108,861 hectares of coffee plantations, will generate 230,000 jobs.
The harvest plan is for the 94 coffee-growing municipalities of Antioquia, with an emphasis on 13 municipalities that have a large number of coffee pickers in the department due to their high coffee production, such as: Andes, Anzá, Betania, Betulia, Caicedo, Ciudad Bolívar, Concordia, Fredonia, Santa Bárbara, Salgar, Abejorral, Toledo, and San Andrés de Cuerquia
Colombia, the world’s largest producer of top-quality Arabica beans, will likely produce 13.2 million bags of 60 kg this year with Antioquia bringing in 16% of the total.
In the province of Antioquia, coffee growers have also undertaken a campaign called Plan Harvest. This plan includes a substantial improvement in accommodation, as well as the offer of better payment conditions and food to make the picking a decent and remunerative work.
Pickers in Colombia are paid by volume. On a good day, a trained picker can earn as much as $50 for collecting the equivalent of 250 kilos of coffee cherries. They get paid an average of COP1,100 Colombian pesos per kilo collected.
“In order to lure pickers, we offer good loading accommodations and good food,” says large Antioquia coffee grower, Juan Alvaro Arboleda, who also offers games and cable TV to pickers.
To improve working conditions, some coffee growers even pay a health checkup before moving into farms and grant preferential medical attention if they get sick.
As the harvest looks big enough, coffee pickers will work every day from 7:00 a.m. until 4 p.m. But some decide to work until sunset to earn more money. They work from Monday through Saturday.
Venezuelans Pick Coffee In Colombia
The arrival of thousands of Venezuelans returning from the US into Colombian territory as President Donald Trump is threatening to deport them, Venezuelans have resumed picking coffee as they did a few years ago, Arboleda noted. Other Venezuelans are the ones who got trapped in Colombia on its way to the US trying to cross the dangerous El Darien rainforest when Trump came in into power toughening immigration laws
In the diaspora of Venezuelans escaping from Venezuelan shortages of food, medicine and basic supplies, have allowed some coffee farms to turn to this workforce, lessening the pressure of a lack of pickers during the main harvest.
As many as 2.5 million Venezuelans live in Colombia seeking a better future, many of which have found in coffee picking an economic activity to earn some money.
“We are seeing a large influx of Venezuelans into coffee picking. We believe they are the ones who are returning from the US. With the arrival of Venezuelans, we are no longer experiencing a chronic shortfall of pickers as we experienced in the past,” he said. “They are very grateful to us for giving them work,” he added.
Usually, Colombia experiences a shortfall of pickers because migration to cities and difficult conditions have led to labor shortages that worry many in the sector because Colombia’s coffee fields are located in steep mountains that does not lend itself to mechanized harvesting done on the farms in Brazil.
Risaralda
The department of Risaralda has also launched its campaign to lure pickers. Jorge Humberto Echeverri Marulanda, Executive Director of the Risaralda Departmental Coffee Growers Committee, emphasized that this inter-institutional plan is based on dignity, profitability, and security:
“This year's harvest has an estimated value of one billion pesos, of which 30% will go to the harvesters and the remainder will boost commerce and services in each municipality. We want the harvest to be not only productive, but also a celebration that unites coffee growers, harvesters, and the community.”
For his part, Juan Carlos Toro Castellanos, Secretary of Agricultural Development for Risaralda, noted that the last coffee harvest contributed 1.2 trillion pesos to the regional economy and generated more than 35,000 temporary jobs:
“The Harvest Plan is key to ensuring that this economic momentum continues, with institutional support and full backing for the more than 19,000 coffee-growing families in the department.”
Regarding security, Mayor Julián Restrepo, from the GAULA Risaralda prevention group, highlighted the actions that will be implemented to prevent crimes such as kidnapping and extortion:
“We will continue to develop self-protection campaigns under our motto ‘I don't pay, I report,’ reminding everyone that the 165 hotline is available for reporting throughout the department.”
The United for the Harvest Plan, which has been in place for nine years, includes strategies such as municipal job boards, customer service centers for coffee pickers, prevention campaigns, assistance in coffee transportation, health and wellness activities, as well as the promotion of fair pay and the use of electronic media to ensure transparency.
The coffee harvest is the economic engine of the department and becomes a true celebration that unites coffee growers, pickers, the community, and authorities to achieve a safe, productive, and dignified harvest.
