Colombia’s Coffee Region Faces Logistic Bottlenecks on Road, Landslides
Coffee Network (Bogota)- Logistic problems associated with road construction and some landslides caused by torrential rainfall are making it more difficult to transport coffee beans from the country’s second-largest coffee-producing province of Antioquia, some coffee growers and the coffee growers federation said.
Torrential rains linked to the country’s second-rainy season have blocked some rural roads in Antioquia’s largest producing region of the southeast, but heavy machinery are clearing roads in half a day, coffee growers in the region told Coffee Network.
“The roads are cleared very rapidly. This is not affecting the transit of coffee,” Juan Alvaro Arboleda, a large coffee grower in the Southeast region said.
Construction of the double-lane road known as Pacifico 1, which will improve traffic between the towns of Amagá and Bolombolo, is forcing the closure of the existing road that connect the southeast of Antioquia with Medellin between 9:00 a.m. and 11::00 a.m. and between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. forcing coffee growers to tune up the shipments of beans to ports.
The southeast of Antioquia is comprised by large coffee-producing municipalities such as Andes, Betanía, Jardin among others.
The coffee growers federation said the logistics bottlenecks could produce a damming of beans at municipalities but they are not concerned because the bulk of the main harvest has not begun yet.
Diminished Production
Another real concern to growers is the estimated trimmed main output in Antioquia. Coffee growers said plantations did not soak up enough sun in January-February of 2021, and as a result the main harvest is coming sharply trimmed.
They also said they are picking very few beans and they expect they could collect higher amounts of beans in October-November-December.
A very pessimistic coffee grower said the harvest is coming as much as 50pc reduced during the main harvest.
Antioquia picks as much as 2.2 million bags on 60-kg in a calendar year. Of that total, 70pc comes in the September-December period. If the grower’s prediction is accurate, Antioquia could be picking 770,000 bags of 60-kg in September-December, half the 1.55 million picked in the same period last year.
Colombia has projected to produce around 14 million bags of 60-kg in the 2021 calendar year, but many analysts are saying that output will not surpass the 13.5 million as the country has endured torrential rains throughout the year.

Daily coffee report

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
