Colombia’s September Rainfall Set To Be Close to Seasonal Averages: Cenicafe

Coffee Network (Bogota)-Rainfall in Colombia’s main coffee regions will remain within the seasonal average in September, while in October there will be an increase in showers due to the beginning of the country’s second rainy season, the coffee research institute Cenicafe, said.

September is the transition month to the second rainy season, especially in he Andean and Caribbean regions, influenced by the transit of Tropical Easterly Waves, cyclonic activity in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, and the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) from the north to the center of the country.

For September, precipitation close to the reference climatology is expected in much of the coffee-growing region. In specific areas of Antioquia, Santander, Cundinamarca, Tolima, Cauca, and Nariño, precipitation decreases of up to 40%.

October is part of the second rainy season in most of the country. In particular, the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone from the north to the center of the country and the passage of Tropical Easterly Waves produce the highest rainfall volumes in much of the Caribbean, Andean, and Midwest Orinoquia regions. The Pacific region maintains its naturally humid conditions, and the Amazon region continues the upward trend in rainfall volumes toward the end of the year. October is considered the rainiest month of the year, according to historic records of the country’s weather office Ideam.

In addition, the conditions of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean are consistent with a Neutral event, between the September-November quarter of 2020.

In August, the volume of precipitation at the Bertha (Boyacá), Misiones (Cundinamarca), El Rosario (Antioquia), La Catalina (Risaralda), La Trinidad (Tolima), Paraguaicito (Quindío) and Manuel Mallarino (Valle del Cauca) stations was above the seasonal averages. See chart.

While at the Naranjal (Caldas) and Jorge Villamil (Huila) stations, it was within the historical range. The number of days with rain at the Bertha (Boyacá), Naranjal (Caldas) and Manuel Mallarino (Valle del Cauca) stations was within the historical range. At the El Rosario (Antioquia), Paraguaicito (Quindío), La Trinidad (Tolima), and La Catalina (Risaralda) stations, the number of days with rain was above the climatological reference, while at the Misiones (Cundinamarca) and Jorge Villamil (Huila) stations, it was below the climatological reference. The water balance results at the El Rosario, Naranjal, Paraguaicito, and La Trinidad stations showed normal conditions throughout the month.

Meanwhile, rainfall behavior at the El Tambo (Cauca) and El Sauce (Nariño) stations, was within the historical range in August, while the number of days with rain was below the historical range in El Sauce and within the historical range in El Tambo
