Colombian President Visits China To Enter the Silk Road, Boost Coffee, Cocoa Exports

Bogota (Coffee Network)- Colombian President Gustavo Petro officially began his state visit to China this Monday as he seeks to enter the so-called “Silk Road,” a move that would increase Chinese foreign direct investment into Colombia, and boost Colombian exports, including coffee and cocoa.

The presidential visit could be summarized in two events: the CELAC-China summit and the inclusion to the Silk Road, the China-led alliance that seeks to replicate the trade routes that have connected China and Europe for centuries.

Colombia, the world’s third-largest coffee producer, exported 3.59 million 60-kg bags of green coffee in the first quarter, up 20.1% compared to the same period in 2024, the coffee growers federation said. Colombia exported  to China 107,638 bags during the first quarter.

Colombia wants to diversify its export-base after the US president imposed trade tariffs to Colombian products, including coffee with a 10% tariff.

Colombia exported 11.018 million 60-kg bags of coffee in January-November, of which 4.344  million bags were shipped to the United States, according to the country’s coffee exporters association. China bought 465,262 bags in January-November.

China became the country’s sixth-largest main coffee export destination, and this ranking could improve as the coffee growers federation said they are seeking to make inroads more aggressively into China. Procafecol, the company behind the Juan Valdez coffee chain, has said it’s exploring entering the Chinese market with coffee shops.

In 2023, Colombia exported 539,264 bags of 60-kg to China, up 132% on the year when it shipped 232,289 bags, FNC figures show.

Of that total, private exporters shipped 389,416 bags in 2023, up 161% from the 149,051 bags in 2022.

FNC exported 149,848 bags to China in 2023, compared with 83,238 bags in 2022.

Petro has stated that they intend to fully join this bloc. "We are going to sign the Silk Road; both Latin America and Colombia are free, sovereign, and independent. And the relations we establish with any people in the world must be based on conditions of freedom and equality. We have decided to take a profound step forward between China and Latin America," he said.

According to the Colombian president, he would not only sign a letter of intent to join the Silk Road, but he would have made the decision to fully enter the trade alliance. A few days ago, in his speech, the president stated that during his trip to China he would sign a letter of intent to join the Silk Road and that it would be the next government that would decide whether or not to join this bloc. However, Monday's statements suggest that the Colombian government would skip this step and seek immediate entry. The reason for this change of heart from the government is unclear. One fact is that this week, President Gustavo Petro and Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia met with the US Chargé d'Affaires in Colombia, John McNamara. At this meeting, the US diplomat reportedly informed Colombia of the consequences for the United States of entering this economic alliance with China. In his statements this Monday, the president emphasized Colombia's freedom to interact and trade with the world. In this regard, he asserted that the headquarters route agreement would allow Colombia to develop its infrastructure based on artificial intelligence.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 6

August 6 – This morning’s stronger-than-expected U.S. labor data offered markets some relief, reinforcing confidence in the economy while giving the Fed greater flexibility to raise rates should inflationary pressures reaccelerate in next week’s July data. Stock futures are pointing to a mixed open to start the day, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq showing the most weakness. The VIX has fallen notably from yesterday’s spike above 18.4 as it starts the day hovering just below the 16-mark. The dollar is quietly higher as it trades just above 99.8, holding in the tight range seen thus far this week as traders continue to digest data to shape expectations for the Fed’s next move, which we’ll dive into in more depth below. Long-term treasury yields have relaxed slightly from their recent spike, with 30-year yields starting the day trading just above 5.19%, while 10-year yields trade above 4.64%, and 2-year yields sit below 4.22%. Crude oil is modestly higher to start the session after sharp declines earlier in the week, with nearby WTI up 1.8% to trade at $76.40 and nearby Brent up 2.4% to trade at $81.40. Meanwhile, the ags are quietly mixed to start the day.
