Costa Rica’s Coffee Crop to Rise Nearly 12% in 2022-2023 Despite Ongoing Challenges

CoffeeNetwork (New York) – Costa Rica’s coffee crop totaled 1,228,362 60-kg bags for the 2021-2022 crop and is expected to rise 11.8% to 1,373,171 60-kg bags for the new 2022-2023 crop, Xinia Chaves Quirós, Executive Director of the Coffee Institute of Costa Rica (ICafe) told CoffeeNetwork in an exclusive interview. Exports should climb from 1,085,511 bags to 1,172,139 60-kilo bags.

“Estimates show that for all the national coffee area, an adequate level of water was received in plantations to produce flowerings and bean development,” she said. “Rains came in time for the flowering stage, which came in a bit early but in time; weather was favorable for the initial development of the bean.  This situation was positive as there is increased production in the current crop.  After this, rains continued at optimum levels, at times higher than the normal requirement during months when rains are limited, for example during the usual dry spell.”

Since humidity levels were above the historical average, some diseases such as Antracnosis, Chasparria, coffee rust, Rosada and Mal de Hilachas have been recorded throughout the country.

According to weather analysis, there was an important threat during the month of March that provoked coffee rust, similar to the Hemiliea vastatrix that affected the crop in 2012. Despite all this, phitosanitary protective measures were implemented in most of the coffee park, and producerswere  able to adopt recommendations derived from the early alert system in place to monitor diseases.

During the filling stage, the distribution of rains allowed the application of fertilizer at the correct times. “This situation allows improvement in the national average pertaining to the cherry and its characteristics and a good head start for the next crop,” Quirós explained.

Weather forecasts show the rainy period will extend until the first days of December 2022, longer than usual; which may in turn accelerate the crop in some regions, but it will not affect bean picking activities in different coffee regions.

Costa Rica lifted all COVID 19 restrictions, but the coffee sector is still implementing basic measures to avoid infections. Furthermore, some farms are requesting vaccine records and Nicaragua is requesting a 72 hour negative test to approve their return into the country.

With weather providing good crop conditions, and COVID restrictions lifted for harvesting, the biggest challenge for Costa Rican coffee producers is productivity, a factor which ICafe works regularly to improve.

Last year the crop was estimated 13.1 60-kg bags per hectare and the next one is projected at 14.7 bags/ha. “These levels are not profitable for growing coffee. In order to correct this, there is a proposal “Program for an Intervention for Productivity” ( Programa de Intervención a la Productividad ) that looks to renovate old plantations by providing financing to producers; as well as a strict follow-up of technical recommendations for the crop, as developed by Instituto del Café de Costa Rica (ICAFE),” Quirós told CoffeeNetwork.

Additionally, Costa Rica is grappling with the same logistical challenges as the rest of the world. Costs, container availability as well as the arrival of shipping vessels has also impacted the country’s coffee sector.

“Costs, equipment and shipping vessels are related to delays in global logistics from COVID-19; other factors are the Russia-Ukranian war, and the fact that Latin American countries are the most affected as they have to compete with North America and even Brazil for container placement,” she said. “It is expected that the country receives lower quality containers, not AAA certified, or larger-sized containers (40 ft instead of 20ft).”

Another challenge is the security issue with shipments, as there is a higher risk of contamination from shipments with prohibited substances from Narco activity, as well as stolen merchandise in transit to port.

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 11

August 11 – It was generally a quiet night for the markets until early this morning when a headline hit that Iran and Oman were close to reaching a deal. Stock futures rallied, while the dollar index followed Treasury yields lower, along with active selling in the energy- and food-based commodities. The headline had limited impact though in a world that has become skeptical of promises of peace. Stock futures remain steady to firmer at this hour, while the VIX trades near 16 – just above 2026 lows. The dollar index is trading near 99.8 this morning, after recovering from its early morning selloff over the following hour of trade. Yields on 10-year Treasuries are trading near 4.69%, while yields on 2-year Treasuries trade near 4.22%. WTI crude oil is trading near $82 per barrel at this hour, while Brent trades near $88. The grain and oilseed markets are mostly weaker, after failing to recover from this morning’s early selloff that started in the crude oil market.
