Fundamentals & Weather

Nat gas prices continued to slide yesterday given relentless mild weather that is causing a major supply/demand imbalance.  Forecasters are predicting more unseasonable warmth for the central and eastern US for late February/early March.  This is heightening expectations for a bearish conclusion to withdrawal season. Mar futures settled 3.3 cents lower Tuesday at 1.576. This marked the lowest close since June 2020.

Another modest storage withdrawal is expected in this week’s report given ongoing mild February temperatures.  Platts is expecting a draw of 65 BCF while Reuters is projecting a pull of 82 BCF.  In either case, the number will fall short of the 5 yr avg draw of 168 BCF .  Last yearn stocks fell by 75 BCF.

Estimates are higher than the previous week’s pull of 49 BCF as demand climbed 4 BCF/day last week to an average of about 119 BCF/day while supply was nearly unchanged.  The persistence of mild weather could leave supplies at levels in excess of 2 TCF by early April.

The recent price drop in nat gas is prompting many US drillers to rethink growth plans as prices have fallen below breakeven levels.

We are seeing a 10% spike in spot month prices this morning due to Chesapeake Energy forecasting a 20% drop in capital expenditure this year.  Their plans for 2024 also point towards production maintenance rather than strong growth.

The spot month contract is currently trading 16 cents higher. With nothing changed fundamentally, it remains to be seen if these gains hold.

Technical Analysis

A near term and possibly long term low may be in place for natural gas prices following a sharp rally higher in post-session trade on Tuesday.

The spot March 24 natural gas contract closed Tuesday’s session at 1.576, down .033, but surged higher by .140 in post-session trade.

The market was primed for a short-covering rally as prices had closed lower three consecutive weeks with the funds short nearly 150,000 contracts.

Tuesday’s 1.522 low is technically important as it was the same level the market bottomed in March 2020.

The 10 day moving average at 1.730 is near term resistance followed by 1.944, the March 2023 low.

It is still too early to tell if a post-winter seasonal low is in place.  7 out of the past 8 years, a post-winter low has been set during the month of February or March.  In each year, it has been a low for the year.

Disclaimer

The StoneX Market Indicator provides an overall view of market sentiment for a commodity based on the quantification of fundamental, technical and historical market data related to that commodity.  Each factor is quantified by comparing data for the current period versus last year, versus the previous period, versus its history and versus the yearly average.  This quantification is converted to a number and summed together. The sum of all factors are reweighted by the 4-year decile of its history. The 4-year deciles redistribute the StoneX Market Indicator to obtain an equal share between the bullish and the bearish signals.  The StoneX Market Indicator History graphically represents each day’s actual very bearish to very bullish signal.  This history contains the sum of all factors, excluding weather forecasts.

The StoneX Value Matrix provides a measure of historical value by analyzing 4 years historical price data distributed into 10 deciles.  All of the years are weighted at 20% with the exception of the most recent year which is weighted at 40%. The prices are adjusted for inflation using the Producer Price Index (PPI).

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
