Fundamentals & weather

Spot month gas prices tumbled ahead of the long weekend amid a fall in overseas prices and forecasts for moderating weather and demand.  The Oct contract settled 47.6 cents lower at $8.786.  For the week, the spot month lost about 5%, marking the biggest drop since the week ended Jul 1. Prices continue to fall this morning with Oct futures trading down more than 35 cents following record high production levels this weekend.

With European storage more than 81% full, prices are coming down hard. In the US, storage levels are at an 11.5% deficit however more shoulder season weather conditions should help boost injections going forward.  Early forecasts for this week’s report suggest a build of 52 which would fall 13 BCF short of the 5 yr avg.

Three weather disturbances are currently being monitored however none appear to be a threat to land as they move away from the US.
Hurricane Danielle formed on Friday in the central Atlantic while the tropical disturbance east of the Lesser Antilles strengthened into TS Earl on Saturday.  As of this morning, Hurricane Danielle was expected to weaken while Earl approaches hurricane strength over the next few days. A tropical depression could form in east Atlantic later this week.

The NWS 8-14 day outlook covering Sep 13-19 shows the eastern ¾ of the US averaging above normal with the West Coast expected to average mostly below normal.
Weather driven demand is estimated to drop to 92 BCF/day over the next 2 weeks.

WTI and Brent Crude Are Now Reading the Strait of Hormuz Differently

Perspective: Morning Commentary for August 7

August 7 – The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23k jobs in July, dramatically below market expectations of an 80k increase and marking the worst Non-Farm Payrolls print since February. Furthermore, May and June were both revised sharply downward, with combined revisions showing 103k fewer jobs than previously reported. Outside of the healthcare sector, which added 22k jobs in July, the losses were very broad-based. Government payrolls saw the largest decline, shedding 53k jobs in July, the largest seen since October 2025, while June was revised down to show a loss of 10k jobs as well. The private sector at least saw growth, adding 30k jobs in July, now matching the month prior after it was revised down from the 49k initially reported, and substantially missing forecasts of 78k jobs being added. This is a sharp reversal in course from the largely better than expected U.S. labor data seen earlier this week.
